Spotlight on fandoms - The Dark Knight
Ooooooooookay, Sam here with the Spotlight on Fandoms: The Dark Knight edition. Now, I know, you might think this is sort of redundant considering the movie just came out over the summer and it made almost a billion dollars (it'll pass a billion, most likely) and everyone and their mother went to see it. But you know what? I don't care. It's the goddamn Batman and he demands your attention.
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in 2005 Christopher Nolan (director of Memento and The Prestige) gave the Batman series a much-needed reboot. Yes, we needed it. Did you really want Batman's last movie to be Batman and Robin? I didn't think so. With Batman Begins Nolan stayed far, far away from the campiness of previous Batman films and gave the series a much darker background. He took elements from some Batman comics (most notably Batman: Year One) to re-tell how Bruce Wayne became the Caped Crusader. The movie kicked ass and made a ton of money and a sequel was quickly put into the works. That sequel is The Dark Knight, which takes place a year after Batman Begins.
What's This Movie About?
Spoiler-free version.
Okay, so, Batman has been on the scene kicking ass in Gotham for a year. He's got most of the criminals in the city running scared but is still having trouble keeping down the mob bosses in Gotham. He, and his cop BFF Lieutenant Gordon team up with the new and ambitious D.A. Harvey Dent and come up with a plan that will hit the mob where it hurts: their wallets. The mob doesn't like that much at all. In their hour of desperation they hire a highly erratic and all-around creepy criminal to help them out. Said criminal wears clown makeup and a faaaaaaaaaabulous purple suitthat Umbridge knitted him. Come on, you know who it is. Yes, the Joker. The Joker decides that the only way to stop ambitious golden boys and do-gooder cops like Harvey and Gordon is to kill the goddamn Batman. He calls Batman out and informs him that people in Gotham will die until he unmasks himself.
Annnnnnnnd then there's explosions, car chases, people getting their faces burned off and all of that awesome kind of stuff. Look, it's awesome. I know. I've seen it more times than I care to reveal. People who don't like it suck. No offense.
The Characters

Bruce Wayne/Batman (Christian Bale): THE GODDAMN BATMAN! Bruce Wayne was a young boy when his parents were gunned down by a man named Joe Chill outside of an opera house. Wee Bruce grows up vowing to somehow avenge his parents deaths. He traveled the world studying the criminal mind, eventually ending up in the mountain dojo ofAslan Qui Gon Ra's al Ghul. He's trained in all sorts of ninja and badassery skills and goes back to Gotham to clear the city of criminals. He takes up the guise of Batman and spends half his time playing kicker of all things ass and half his time playing the billionaire playboy. Honestly...if you don't know about Batman then you've been really sheltered in life. He's broody, grumpy and he's Christian Bale. That's about all you need to know.

The Joker (Heath Ledger): The Joker's past is completely unknown. Nobody knows his name, nobody knows where he came from and nobody knows how he got those scars on the side of his face. Calling himself "an agent of chaos", the Joker wants to turn Gotham to anarchy where neither the mob nor the police can control anything. The Joker doesn't seem to care about anything but his own amusement and claims not to have a plan for anything. He just does things. "Things" usually involve blowing stuff up. He does have a soft spot for the goddamn Batman and refuses to kill him because he's "just too much fun".

Harvey Dent/Two-Face (Aaron Eckhart): Harvey Dent is Gotham's newly-elected D.A. and is regarded by most as the city's savior; their white knight. Harvey wants to bring down Gotham's mob bosses, even knowing it will put his life in danger. He has no tolerance for cheating or any kind of law-breaking and he grudges Gordon because he keeps crooked cops in his unit (...that doesn't sound right). It's his actions that put the mob on edge and cause them to hire the Joker, which ultimately leads to his downfall. He's also in love with fellow lawyer Rachel Dawes and little does he know he's competing with Batman for her affections.

James Gordon (Gary Oldman): Lieutenant Gordon is one of the few cops in Gotham that isn't being bribed by the mob. He is also one of the few cops who sees Batman as an ally rather than a vigilante. Where Harvey is an idealist, Gordon is a realist. He tries to make do with what he has. He knows the consequences of trying to bring down the mob and tries to keep everything from falling apart. He also realizes what Harvey Dent means to the city's well being and takes to doing what he can to protect Harvey's reputation. Gordon's pretty much awesome. And he has an epic mustache. He also looks like Ned Flanders.

Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal): Rachel is Bruce's oldest friend and is one of the few that knows he's Batman. She has feelings for Bruce but decided in the last movie when she was Katie Holmes that she couldn't be with him while he was doing the whole crime fighting thing. She is also dating Harvey Dent. This wench has Christian Bale and Aaron Eckhart after her and Heath Ledger said she was beautiful. WTF. That's not fair. Ahem. She's very level-headed and doesn't really approve of Harvey and Bruce's often drastic plans for saving Gotham. She wants to get rid of crime, yes, but she would like to do it in a manner that doesn't involve things getting blown up. Oh Rachel...silly girl.

Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman): The Q to Bruce's Bond, Lucius provides all the nifty gadgets that Batman uses for ass kicking. He is a higher up at Wayne Enterprises and is publicly handling most of the business affairs since it has to look like Bruce just doesn't give a crap about business. Come on, it's Morgan Freeman. He's always awesome.

Alfred Pennyworth (Michael Caine): ...It's Alfred. He invented English badassery.
My god, this movie had an epic cast.
Why Should I See This Movie...Again
* Because everybody loves Batman - You are a dirty liar if you say you don't.
* Heath Ledger's performance is AMAZING - I can safely say there is no hype to this. He did a fantastic job and the first time I saw the movie I had to actually remind myself that this is the same guy from Brokeback Mountain. He completely loses himself in the character and you can tell that he thought out every movement when filming. Really, it's one of the best performances I've ever seen.
* There's explosions! - Chris Nolan tried to use as little CGI as possible so you get to see crap get really blown up! The Joker lights a huge pile of money on fire while at the same time burning an accountant alive! And a tractor trailer gets flipped over!
*Cillian Murphy - He's in it for like two seconds but isn't that enough reason to see it?
*The Batman voice - Um. I don't know why Christian Bale felt the need to make Batman talk like a 60 year old chain smoker with a lisp but I am SO GLAD he did. It's hilarious.
*It's the small things in life - Guys in drag, mayors wearing eyeliner, people getting their faces burned off, pencil tricks...these are all awesome, awesome things.
*Because everyone else has seen it - And you don't want to be that one person at the party who is like "...I've never seen it." Come on, all the cool kids are watching it and if you say you don't want to be cool you are a LIAR.
Where Can I Find It?
Well, it only came out in July so before I would have had to tell you to find a theater that was still playing it. Or download it illegally. Not that you should do that. I certainly didn't *shifty eyes* But you are in luck, my friends! The movie comes out on dvd this Tuesday, December 9th. For those of you lucky bitches who have Blu-Ray, I'd recommend getting it on that format since it has a lot more extras on it.
