Canon. We all have to deal with it, as our characters, y'know, come from it and all. And sometimes there are parts that make us go "WTF" or headdesk or threaten to burn effigies of the writers/executive producers/directors/dudes who drove past the set one day.

And then there are the things that make us go "No. No. No no no. No. Noooooo. No. No. No no. No. No no no. No." Really? Sixteen no's?

So, game, what part of your canon will you not touch with a ten-foot pole and why? Let your rage out, it's a good day for it.

gobrookeyourself: (well what can i do)

[personal profile] gobrookeyourself 2009-01-17 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Seasons 5 & 6. I was all keen on the idea (and still think fast forwarding four years was a good idea), and I sat through Nathan's paralysis where he wasn't really paralyzed, he was kind of just lazy. I sat through them trying to break up Naley again because of a psycho nanny who had to kidnap the world's most adorable child. I sat through adoption agencies randomly giving SPECIAL NEEDS BABIES to BROOKE. I watched Lucas, who was at one time just a clueless but well-meaning guy turn into an utter douche. And I watched Leyton go from the ship I didn't really care about to "OMG PEYTON HAVE SOME SELF-RESPECT YOU CAN DO BETTER."

As of s6 the show is dead to me. Dead like a dead thing. I have four years to play with post-graduation, which I love a lot. And then I can do my own thing and just hope OTH gets canceled soon because the actors all deserve way better projects.

I'm keeping Jamie, though.

This is the ONLY account where I really have spleen to vent (though I have a wary eye on the producers of Chuck), but it's a lot of spleen.

I am totally ignoring the ongoing arc that paired Claire with Billy Chenowith. Yes, Six Feet Under is a soap opera that kind of lived to torture its characters, to the point where Peter Krause was openly bitching about it in interviews by the last season. But I am still not pairing my underage character with her brother's fiancés brother. For one, Billy is about 12 years older (going from Brenda's canon age). Which, okay, not the HUGEST deal ever, but still squicky when the younger partner is a HS/college student. For another, he's seriously mentally ill (manic depressive) and goes off his meds and does scary shit regularly. A WORLD of nonononononononono on that for my Claire -- she may like bad boys, but that doesn't mean she has to go for the unstable insane.

The other thing I'm dropping is the antiwar stuff. It was relevant when the show was made and relatively organic to the character, but there's no point (or fun) in rehashing it in RP.

But everything else, from her choice of college to the blank space on the screen named Russell who she dated for a season and a half to her experimentation with Edie to Nate dying at a point where I'm ready to say Good Riddance, I'll do. I hope I'll make my Claire slightly less whiny than she sometimes was in canon, but she still has all of that to look forward to. I know she's thrilled.

As far as I'm concerned, nothing past the end of the Soul Society rescue arc in Bleach exists. Not only did it wind up being a convoluted twist-and-turn piece of crap of Tite Kubo taking everything that I loved about the series and blatantly ignoring it for higher powered, OMFG SEE HOW AWESOME THEY ARE? characters I don't even care about, but it was also a TEASE in that it made me think he was going to go back to what I loved and characters I care about, only to completely renig that for more episodes than I would want to bother sitting through.

I don't even care if Chad gets a shiny new power with his other arm; trying to weed through all that crap just to figure out some way to make it work, when I'll probably have to support half of the reason for it with my own theories since Kubo is a Vaguey McVaguerson, is just nooooot worth the pain. At all.

I'll stick to fantasizing about back when Bleach was awesome and I couldn't wait for the next chapter/episode. Which was almost three years ago...

*SIGH*

THIS ENTIRE SEASON OF SMALLVILLE. EVERY. SINGLE. BIT OF IT. Chloe could have easily become the Smallville version of Oracle on her own, but nooooo she had to be infected by Brainiac so she could spend a dozen episodes having the exact. same. conversation. with Clark about how "I know there's something wrong with me, but the super intelligence is super helpful, so I'm not going to go get help," and then there was that whole thing with her wedding day getting ruined by Doomsday showing up and kidnapping her because HE'S IN A LOVE TRIANGLE WITH HER AND JIMMY BECAUSE THAT'S TOTALLY WHAT PEOPLE WHO KILL SUPERMAN ARE LIKE and don't even get me started on the whole "Chloe's too vulnerable to bear the burden of my secret, so she shouldn't have those memories" YES CLARK WE ARE LOOKING AT YOU.

And now they're saying they want to make a season nine. I kind of want to cry.

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
well, they gave her her memory of Clark being Superman back?

But, yes. I was vastly annoyed that they had her being Oracle, or Watchtower, and then devalued it with "oo, it's because she's got a weird superpower" and not because she's obsessive and committed and made of awesome, damnit.

I fear your canon. I really do.

I'm such a fixer. So the things I hate most about Parker's canon (her mom's death going technically unsolved, Angelo not being her brother, Brigitte marrying her father, various dirty deeds committed by Lyle) have either already been or are going to be addressed and warped. I'm looking to make this Parker's life more triumphant and happier at the end of it, but that's not difficult, since we never got any freaking closure and she was a miserable, trapped corporate hatchet-woman for most of the run. Anything is an improvement over that.

However:

1) I'm not getting into Parker and Jarod's shared half-brother. Because that whole thing was just stupid. Ethan was sweet but very very pointless.

2) Mr. Raines will never do a Sexy Dance in leopard-print underwear. And if Broots dreams he does, he better keep it to himself.

*goes off to look for brain bleach*

Canon? I don't have any huge problems with canon at the moment. PAD is taking his own sweeeeeeet time to roll out some big plotty moments but I can be patient for another few years or so for them to roll out. (Other than having Layla back soon plz!)

However my main complaint is the art.

Like (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/iamgumboy/X-Factor33Zone-Meganpg09.jpg) this (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/iamgumboy/X-Factor33Zone-Meganpg16.jpg).

It's a good thing that PAD is writing this comic because art in it has gotten worse and worse as the series has gone on. I get it that the artist was trying to do something different but I'd like my characters well drawn than looking like they just were smooshed into silly putty forms.

[identity profile] once-a-traitor.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)

But other than that? Parents biting the dust, Uncles trying to take over, screwing up every chance at happiness with the girl he loves? Yeah, I'm all over that.

Dirge of Cerberus.

Okay. So. Final Fantasy VII was a good game. It was. It suffered some horrible translation errors, but it was still a good game.

There was a prequel, Crisis Core, which faithfully portrayed the events that happened before the original, there was another prequel, Before Crisis, which... Wasn't too faithful, and retconned like a sonofagun, but at least it gave me canon for Reno and the Turks, so I can't hate it too much.

Advent Children- More retcons, but at least the depiction of Edge two years after the world almost ends seems... About as realistic as one might expect, from this sort of genre. The novel, I found, fleshed out more of that same feel, expanding on the world's need for simple things like food and transportation. I loved the novel for the way it portrayed the aftermath.

Dirge of Cerberus, the sequel to all of that, takes canon, stuffs it into a cannon, fires it into the sun, and then pees on the ashes. I will not be playing out the events of Dirge of Cerberus in game here, because it just makes no sense. There is a fleet of airships! Part of Sector Seven, which was CRUSHED UNDER A CITY BY RENO, not only survived, but it has electricity still running to it, in spite of the city's reactor being IN PIECES. There are HOVER VESPAS, for the love of--

In a world that has recently suffered a crippling environmental and socio-economic collapse, someone, somewhere, has decided to invent and mass-produce freaking hover scooters.

I love my canon. Dirge of Cerberus is not allowed to be my canon, thank you very much.
