tell me a story, game!

So with the new kids coming in and showing off their shiny new fandoms, I'm curious.

How'd you get into your canon?

Did you just pick it up one day and found yourself unable to put it down, or did someone (maybe from this game) drag you into it? How long have you been into it? Was there any one thing or character that hooked you on it? This is your chance to wax nostalgic and go on about what made your canon so cool for you. If there's a story behind it, tell us! And if there's not... tell us anyway!

There's been quite a few FMA characters at FH, but I got into the series when Zuko ended up rooming with Alphonse. I adored the character and was so curiosu that I started watching the anime (the real one, not frigging Brotherhood) on youtube of all places. And I loved it. It's one of those series where every single character is made of win and you just end up loving all of them.

So once I finished the anime, I started mainlining the manga and... It was even more awesome. It made me love every character even more because they became more fleshed out. The anime sucks you in, the manga makes you never want to let them go.

And yes, once I finished, I just had to app Roy because kind of rules them all.

Hehehehehe. It's interesting that you love the manga, but don't seem to like Brotherhood ;)

But, yes, it's like every character in the series is amazing. Though my favorites are Roy and Riza... (Speaking of, if you haven't seen this (http://bookelfe.livejournal.com/171194.html), I think it might be of interest to you!)

Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiic! I tend to stay away from FMA fic as it usually disappoints me, but I will read!

Honestly, I hate the art in Brotherhood. It bugs the hell out of me and there is very little reason to keep watching if you've read the manga. I liked that the old anime was different. Two different stories, but they both rang true to the characters. This one leaves me 'meh', but admittedly, I'll watch once they do the English dubs with Travis. Because I'll put up with badly drawn Roy if I can hear Travis' voice.

Ah, good point there. I mostly use Brotherhood to hook people on the series because it's easier than getting them to read manga. Because I think the narrative there is much stronger, but it's basically a direct copy so there's nothing new there.

Of course that's kinda of what I like about it, since there were definite elements of the first series that I thought were really stupid. (I wonder if that's because I read the manga first?)

Anyway, yes, fic! I also tend to avoid FMA fic, but every so often there's something good!

The end of the series makes absolutely no sense, but then the ending of the manga isn't making much either.

It's more than the art about Brotherhood that bothers me, but I honestly can't put my finger on it. It simply doesn't grasp me as much, the characters don't stand out the way they did in the first anime and do in the manga. I have no clue why, maybe because I never saw the point to it and I didn't give it a fair chance, but I don't think that's it. It feels too condensed or something? I dunno!

Anime is definitely easier to get in to, but I still would refer people to the old one. The soundtrack was awesome, the art was good and the feeling of the series was true to the manga more than the reproduction feels to me.

Heh. There were changes in the first anime I really liked, but... actually, I know why it lost me! (Sudden epiphany time!)

I feel like the first series didn't understand the degree to which FMA is about old soldiers. It seemed to treat the story as more of a save-the-world-adventure. That's, perhaps, a little unfair, but it's a big sticking point with me.

I might have a thing for the old soldiers routine. *eyes Red Star*

In their defense, FMA wasn't as far yet. But it's definitely more focussed on Al and Ed. Maybe that's because I did watch it first that I didn't mind. I loved it and I liked the story of Roy and his staff best. So when I got to the manga, I had even more of that and was all excited! The anime for me was the introduction.

*nodnod* That totally makes sense! Order does matter, and it's not like the first series was awful or anything. But having started with the manga, it felt like it was missing something...

And, yes, clearly its Roy and the team that is the best. *more nodding*

Heeeee! I sometimes feel a wee bit badly that my main concern is with the side characters. I mean, I adore Al and Ed but but... ROY AND RIZA!

[identity profile] sorella-vecchia.livejournal.com 2010-05-06 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehehehehe. No need to feel bad! After all, Ed and Al are fine and all, but it's clearly all about Roy, Riza, and the gang! (And aaaalmost everyone I know who's into FMA agrees. Because! Awesome!)

FOREVER! *never lets go*

(Also, it is because I know you recognize this truth that I recommended that particular fic.)

I read it too and it was made of win and omg. So IC and eeeeeeeeeeeeee! Want more now, dammit!

She tells me she's working on some more FMA fic, but I don't have any details. I know, however, that it will be fun :)
