Pimp Mah Class!

Hello!

Enjoying some of the new features of class sign ups? Well, this post is going to go somewhat hand in hand and it's also braaaaaaaaaand new, suggestion courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] notquitewright.

So, teachers, lend us your eyes! Wanna tell the game at large about your class in more detail than the class sin-ups can give? This is the post to do it! Ping in and list your class, tell everyone about it, persuade students to sign up with the seductive power of your word-thingies, answer questions, offer bribes! However you'd like to do it, this is the place to do it! Pimp it, shake it, stir it and go!

This is, of course, completely voluntary! Have fun!

My class is... pretty much exactly what the course description says it is, and there's a syllabus for good measure! But I'm around to answer questions, should anyone have them.

Mostly I just have to share that I saw the title of this post and my brain immediately jumped to a mental image of applying a flame decal up the side of my syllabus, some chrome and LED headlights, and a washing machine in the trunk.

Practical Marksmenship

Since my teaching buddy is swamped at work today, I shall point you all to the lovely syllabus (http://stayingfrosty.livejournal.com/1897.html) he posted last night.

Basically the class will be doing danger shop simulations of popular video games. There will be no point where students are teamed up against each other.

[identity profile] funnyways.livejournal.com 2010-06-25 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Though I do feel the need to quick point out that while these are simulations of popular video games, each of the events will be treated as real world examples from their own respective universes.

Thrill at the intrigue of being a SAS sniper! Cower in fear at the monstrous Big Daddy and his giant drill bit of Murder! Fight off zombies while gathering gas cans from a mall to fuel an escape vehicle! Enjoy tasty tasty pie as you throw it at your fellow classmates!

I am totally making it up as I go along. Drake'll actually probably totes rip off Dead Poets Society for the first class, and then ask his students things they want to do with their lives for ideas.

Sing Like a Pirate!

[identity profile] capt-maxfactor.livejournal.com 2010-06-25 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
The part about how upper body strength is important in the course summary (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh_ooc/777153.html?thread=30230977#t30230977)? That's because in order to keep the beat in most pirate songs, you need to be hauling ropes, raising sails, and rowing in time with your classmates.

Jack's laugh is an evil laugh.

Plus you'll get to learn the words to "The Mermaid," "Yo Ho, Yo Ho" and "Hoist the Colors." And get rambled at by one Captain Jack Sparrow. What's not to love?

Oh, oh, question! From the wrong account, actually, but whatever: will students have their choice of weapons, or is it all "Use this gun that we give you?"

ie, if someone had a student who was say, an excellent archer....

Re: Practical Marksmenship

[identity profile] lovethenubbins.livejournal.com 2010-06-25 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm good question.

Ash & Price both have experience primarily with guns (though I'd imagine Ash has at least used a crossbow on occasion).

But I'm inclined to say that the students could *also* complete the exercises with another weapon in addition to learning to use the guns.

I have a question for you. WHY IS MARK SALLING SO EFFING HOT?

Practical Crisis Problem...Thingy (Getting Out of Trouble Badly)

[identity profile] worsethanaunts.livejournal.com 2010-06-25 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Look! A syllabus (http://worsethanaunts.livejournal.com/425.html)! And what a silly bus it is. I don't have the workshop list set yet, but I will in advance. I'm torn between 'situations the Doctor has been in tweaked to suit high school students with varying abilities' and 'situations the Doctor has been applied to a Fandom setting!'

The workshops will lean towards the kind where it's really like an open post where things are happening and people bounce off each other and work together and sometimes there'll be NPCs and there will always be the Doctor to hassle your character. You'll get out of the workshop what you put in to it.

But for those not up to speed, there will undoubtedly be spoilers for the first 6 episodes of Series 5 of Doctor Who. Possibly eventually beyond, depending on how the finale plays out this weekend, but definitely some stuff out of the first six.

Any questions?

Self Defense and Kickassery for Dummies

[identity profile] notagoodslayer.livejournal.com 2010-06-25 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
With a syllabus! (http://notagoodslayer.livejournal.com/796.html)

Just what says in the can, these are seven classes with you and Faith, learning how to defend yourself against the evil big bads that might or might not lurk in your world...or just knowing you can totally own the lame burglars on the alleyway. A pretty simple class, and you can even punch Faith! I mean, you can try.

That with the added bonus of extra surprises here and then, product of whatever rush of imagination I might have at the moment.

Ask away!

I feel that that is one of the mysteries of our time that will never be solved, and we should just take it as a gift.

Re: Practical Marksmenship

[identity profile] stayingfrosty.livejournal.com 2010-06-25 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely, yes. They won't be bringing their own weapons into the Danger Shop, but any requests for specific simulated firearms will be allowed, within reason (i.e, no asking for bazookas on Bioshock day).

Terrain and You

[personal profile] atreideslioness 2010-06-25 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I look at the post name, and all I can think of is Pimp My Bookcart...

From cityscapes to icebergs, each week we will look at a different type of terrain, and one thing you can do to make your life easier. Please be aware that there is no syllabus to this class, because Ghanima is a cruel woman and does not want you to have time to prepare for each scenario.

Students may end up covering a few of the same types of terrain, but with different activities from last time. You can see previous classes here, and I'm happy to take suggestions on what ya'll would like to do this time around.

I'm pretty fond of the wrench in Bioshock, actually. (See also: Erin has not gotten past the early levels, once again.)

BUT YAY, THANK YOU. I shall ponder my classes, then.

Leadership for Social Change

[identity profile] evilblogofevil.livejournal.com 2010-06-25 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Course Description & Signups (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh_ooc/777153.html?thread=30228929#t30228929)

I was going to teach Villainy 101, but thought it might be hard to get students to sign up. Thus, renamed it "Leadership for Social Change." This class will involve discussions and Danger Shop scenarios on how to save the world from itself, using methods that are slightly less than ethical.

Note that Dr. Horrible doesn't actually like hurting or killing people (unless they really piss him off) so his kind of evil is about Saturday morning cartoon level and involve a lot of non-lethal Mad Scientist devices.

The Five Senses

[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com 2010-06-25 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Fraser's going to make everyone lick the dirt.

...

No, I'm kidding but this class is going to focus on using each of your five senses to the fullest extent of your capabilities. Fraser's going to attempt to teach students how to hear small noises above the din of a crowd, smell things that are out of the ordinary, see one person in the blur of a busy city street, and taste dirt. A lot of these activities will either take place in the Danger Shop or on the mainland where there's more opportunity for testing the senses in an uncontrolled environment.
