Meme: What's in a name?

Last time this was done? About a year ago.

Here's how it works:

Tell us about your character's LJ name, what it means and how did you decide on it?

[identity profile] batwaffles.livejournal.com 2011-06-23 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Waffles are a running gag in Bryan Q. Miller's Batgirl volume 3 run starring Steph (which has been consistently well-reviewed and selling well and only has two issues to go before it's banished into obscurity by this STUPID STUPID RELAUNCH CRAP ARGH YES FEEL FREE TO WTF WITH ME); according to Steph it's her mom's new way of bonding with her when she comes home from the night shift at the hospital.

But waffles show up in every issue: if it's not Steph and her mom eating them, it's Barbara Gordon, or Steph and Damian, or somebody. There's always waffles.

And in the running gag of Bat-everythings, I thought it'd be a funny journal name.

I also realized, after I'd created it, that it's fitting for Steph despite the fact that at FH she's coming from well before the point in time where she's Batgirl -- she started out as a vigilante just to stop her dad from pulling off a big heist, and kept swearing she'd give it up after one more fight. And kept not giving it up.

Which is how she ends up becoming Batgirl, actually.

So, y'know, she kind of waffles on that.

[identity profile] whitequeensfire.livejournal.com 2011-06-23 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] whitequeensfire because at the point I pulled Angelica from, she's being groomed to be personal assassin for the White Queen, aka Emma Frost, and because she throws fire. (...I do not have a type. Shut up.)

[livejournal.com profile] trigons_child because Raven was supposed to be the only child of Trigon the Terrible. Until DC retconned her six brothers into existence and decided to make them embodiments of the Seven Deadly Sins. Oh, canon.

[livejournal.com profile] likesscoundrels because Leia likes scoundrels, duh. ;)

[livejournal.com profile] redheadbabyvamp for Jessica because, well, she is.

[livejournal.com profile] demonbelthazor because...his name is Belthazor and he's a demon. So original it BURNS.

[livejournal.com profile] blessed_twice because Wyatt's birth was prophesied with "When three planets burn as one over a sky of dancing light, and magic will rest for a holy day to welcome a twice-blessed child," which foretold Wyatt would be the most powerful magical being ever to walk the Earth. And an ego to match.

[livejournal.com profile] auntie_vida because vida's like everybody's auntie, pumpkins.

[identity profile] ancientbschamp.livejournal.com 2011-06-23 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Because even I occasionally look at this username and wonder what it has to do with the Baby-Sitters' Club, yes, it's "Ancient BS Champ." Because when she has to talk her way out of a situation, Gabrielle is totally full of crap -- she'll make up the most outrageous stuff to suit her purposes if it'll get her out of trouble, and up until recently had a horrible, horrible habit of embellishing whenever she wrote down stories about her adventures with Xena. Full-blown purple prose stuff.

But she's really, really good at being full of crap, and as far as talking her way out of trouble, it works as often as it gets her into more trouble, so the "champ" is partly serious and partly sarcastic.
longislandiceme: (thinking)

[personal profile] longislandiceme 2011-06-23 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] bridge_carson - Um. I didn't even put this one here at first because, well, it's his name. Not hard to figure out the reasoning behind that. But now I'm putting it here anyway.

[livejournal.com profile] longislandiceme - He's from Long Island, he makes ice. Nuff said.

[livejournal.com profile] shagthis - Because Jake likes to use "shag" as profanity. Ladies, feel free to take it as an imperative, though ;)

[livejournal.com profile] faithandscience - The two most important things in William's life. That it's possible they contradict each other sometimes is something he chooses to ignore most of the time.

[livejournal.com profile] godgavemecable - "If god hooks you up with free cable, you gotta think he expects you to do a little surfing." A quote from the first episode regarding Toby's opinion of his telepathy, modified slightly to fit LJ-name character limits.

[identity profile] withasword.livejournal.com 2011-06-23 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
The only one I haven't explained yet before I go to bed!

As with most of my kids, [livejournal.com profile] withasword is part of a canon quote that amuses me.

"I frowned at the parcel. It lay on the grimy landing before my new door — the old one had to be replaced when a demon burst through it. I'd built a bit of a reputation in the neighborhood as that crazy bitch with a sword who lives in 32B, an image I carefully cultivated, but even so, an unattended parcel should have been pilfered within seconds of hitting the ground.

Maybe it was booby-trapped.

[identity profile] wesleynotponcy.livejournal.com 2011-06-23 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Wesley's username came from an exchange between Wesley and Gunn in the Angel episode "Redefinition":

Gunn: Was one of his directives "Hire pansy-ass British guy?"
Wesley: My arse is not pansy!

So, you know, wesleynotpansy, but then I thokught of how Pansy can be a name, so I changed it to [livejournal.com profile] wesleynotponcy. Definitely not because I just remembered the dialogue wrong. Nuh-uh.

dollpocalypse: (smartass: smartass casual)

[personal profile] dollpocalypse 2011-06-23 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Topher's from Dollhouse, where he programs "dolls" to assume various tasks, and the technology that he invents ends up causing the apocalypse. Toward the end of the show, he wonders whether he should call it the thoughtpocalypse or the brainpocalypse, saying that he should get to name it since he caused it in the first place.

And I just went with [livejournal.com profile] dollpocalypse because I think it rolls off the tongue better. Sorry, Topher.
weetuskenraider: (Um - Rubbing Neck)

[personal profile] weetuskenraider 2011-06-23 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Never mind that one of the descriptions of her in Fate of the Jedi says that she's tall -- all through the New Jedi Order books, which is the appropriate time period anyway, it gets repeatedly emphasized that Tahiri is short. Like gratuitous mentions of her feet not touching the floor when she sits in a chair short, with a very slender build, etc. She's tiny.

And raised by the Sand People (which is an aspect of her personality that got forgotten a lot, so I kind of wanted to highlight that). It's pretty self-explanatory.

[identity profile] annieadderall.livejournal.com 2011-06-23 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] annieadderall- High school nickname, guess why! There's a little sing songy taunt that goes with it and makes her look sad. I have no idea how this name was not taken.

[livejournal.com profile] smartestone- This was me being uncreative as every. single. username. I could think of was already taken by the time I made the journal. Hermione's the brightest witch in her class, but since variations on that were taken, I gave up and went with this.

[livejournal.com profile] solo_sword- Used to be trickster-twin because in the NJO, the Vong had associated Jacen and Jaina with their slayer and trickster gods and guess which one she was. But after the NJO that wasn't applicable anymore so I changed it because she's the Sword of the Jedi and I like alliteration, basically.
therewaslife: (↑ | i can be smug)

[personal profile] therewaslife 2011-06-23 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I was shocked that you were able to snag [livejournal.com profile] annieadderall, man. What a freaking coup!

I really like turning bits of quotes into usernames and Bod's might be one of my favorites. The Graveyard Book ends with this line:

But between now and then, there was life; and Bod walked into it with his heart and his eyes wide open.

I adore that line so much so pulling a username from it was natural. I've actually thought about changing it to nimeni but yeah, still can't part with this one.

vanillajello: (So I hear you say.)

[personal profile] vanillajello 2011-06-23 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Randomly, nimeni always throws me for a loop because it also means 'my name' in Finnish.

Miley's is easy; it's just lyrics from a song she writes in the Hannah Montana movie. A song that went on to be so overplayed IRL that I believe it was my ringtone at one point. Don't hate.

[identity profile] charming-thief.livejournal.com 2011-06-23 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Neal's is also easy. You know, 'cause he's a thief and he's charming. NBD.

[identity profile] seaweed-demigod.livejournal.com 2011-06-23 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Percy's was originally h20halfblood which I liked but man, I used to mess up the spelling so much. In the end, going with the naming scheme [livejournal.com profile] trickydemigod had already setup was too much to resist.

In the books, Percy's nickname (coined by Annabeth) is Seaweed Brain (because Percy ain't so smart, you see) so I pulled part of that and added it onto demigod and there we go.

[identity profile] puppywithatutu.livejournal.com 2011-06-23 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Caroline is [livejournal.com profile] puppywithatutu because during a rousing game of Pictionary (do not ask why she was playing Pictionary with old people), Caroline shouts out "Puppy with a tutu!" in response to Damon's attempt at conveying the film Dances With Wolves. It's kind of adorable and I like quotes, so. See? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rr1KCrwijsA) I was prouder of my PW Stefan Salvatore journal name [livejournal.com profile] hey_its_tuesday, another Caroline quote (http://youtu.be/GldJ8Yq-I6E).

Nico got [livejournal.com profile] deaths_demigod because I like themes and he's his father's son, after all.

Dimitri is [livejournal.com profile] guardian_god for both a username theme and a canon quote!

Barney is [livejournal.com profile] suit_of_awesome because he wears suits and he's awesome and it was 2007 so I get a pass.

[identity profile] cursedconman.livejournal.com 2011-06-23 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
The conman half is easy. Cassel's entire family are a bunch of cons and thieves and hitmen for the mob and he's learned to be a nice conman himself.

The curse part is because in Cassel's universe the people who have powers are known as "curse workers". They can curse people with a touch of their hand and get cursed in return when they use their powers.

So he's a cursed conman.

[identity profile] kestrelswolf.livejournal.com 2011-06-23 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
In the first book, Firekeeper decided to leave the wolf pack she was raised by to go live with humans. There she was adopted by Norvin Norwood, Earl of House Kestrel (because he wanted to pass her off as his dead niece in order to make a bid for the throne, not because he's the kind of guy who just adopts random orphans). So, she's part of House Kestrel and she's a wolf, making her the Kestrel's wolf.

... Even if she'd bristle a lot at the idea of "belonging" to anyone.

[identity profile] tripledmyself.livejournal.com 2011-06-23 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Nathan's is very, very crude but it's only crude if you know what it means. So, if you're really interested, this (www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-WUBrH9RTo) (I hope since I'm just grabbing the link from Google and can't access YT at work) will explain what tripledmyself means. It's NWS but it's Nathan being Nathan and not even really the worst thing Misfits has ever done.

hurtingzeebo: (I'm on drugs)

[personal profile] hurtingzeebo 2011-06-23 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] hurtingzeebo was nearly a couple of other things, the most prominent of which being "bornonabus", since . . . she was born on a bus (her mom's not real good at planning things). But then I remembered the bit from the episode where iCarly gets produced for a tv station and they get a talking dinosaur named "Zeebo" added to the cast, and Sam beats said dinosaur to the floor with a boom mic while the dinosaur shouts "hurting Zeebo, hurting Zeebo!"

And, well. . . . Yeah.

[livejournal.com profile] gastronomistic (who will be arriving on island this weekend I swear) has a PhD in molecular gastronomy and an almost magical ability to cook anything. Also, "urgetobaste" was definitely going to trip me up more.

And lastly and also not yet on islandy but I wanna talk about it anyway, [livejournal.com profile] locointhecoco. Pinkie actually calls someone else this, but, uh. It's a perfect description of her. Trust me.
hurtingzeebo: (I'm fanning my mouth)

And now that work isn't eating my brain, ALL THE OTHERS:

[livejournal.com profile] nadiathesaint Her name was Nadia Santos. Shut up, she was my first character.

[livejournal.com profile] superartie You know, I'm not sure Artie was ever canonically even called "super". But "the strongest man . . . in the WORLD!" is way over 15 characters.

[livejournal.com profile] notentirely Ah, here we go. Lucas from Empire Records. Who frequently replies to things like " is it true you committed the perfect crime?" with "not entirely perfect". (Okay, so he actually does it, like, twice.)

[livejournal.com profile] actingreaper Daisy Adair from Dead Like Me. She's a reaper. She's an actress. She's . . . active as a reaper. Yep.

[livejournal.com profile] forgottenpants Possibly my favorite ever. Pete Hutter, from this quote: "Forget about it? You mean... rip it from my memory like a picture from a book? A picture of a small boy... kind of shy... with big ears who only wanted to be liked. And the laughing faces of his classmates, mocking him because he forgot to wear his pants to school? Is that what you mean?"

[livejournal.com profile] sneerkite Steerpike from the Gormenghast novels. There's a running bit about how no one can ever get his name right. It's possibly what makes him go evil.

[livejournal.com profile] getupanddoit Maddie and Syvvie, from The Kathy and Mo Show, fandom of, like, one. They always said, you can do anything you want to do, as long as you're willing to get up and do it. . . .

[livejournal.com profile] stuckeyboy Warren Cheswick from Ed. To this day, I call Justin Long "Warren Cheswick". In Fandom, he lasted, like . . . a month? Before I got distracted and went on sabbatical.

[livejournal.com profile] unddann Lola from Run, Lola, Run. Through out the movie, there's these little flashforwards of momentary characters, each of which is introduced with "und dann" ("and then" in German)

[livejournal.com profile] makestheworld Coyote, from Coyote Blue. There's a great book called "Trickster makes the world" that got me interested in playing a trickster character, and well, it worked better than "meetmeatxroads"

[livejournal.com profile] lovemykilt Priestly loves his kilt. And "ilovemykilt" was taken. ([livejournal.com profile] lostmykilt was his vamp AU persona, with [livejournal.com profile] hatesthekilt as his mother. . . .)

[livejournal.com profile] scruffnfeathers Castiel. He's a scruffy angel. I spent ages coming up with that.

[livejournal.com profile] notmyownage Claudia, from the following exchange: "You should be with kids your own age!" "I'm not my own age!"

With guest star journals: [livejournal.com profile] 4inskokieil - Verbal Kint for Villain!Con, [livejournal.com profile] paintmeplaid - Strong Guy for Jamie Madrox, [livejournal.com profile] murraysmomma - Delores Herbig for . . . I think the school board visited?, [livejournal.com profile] acmeshopper - Wile. E. Coyote from Nemesis Island, and [livejournal.com profile] lovesthedutch - Veronica Palmer, for Career Day, [livejournal.com profile] nudged - Claudia's AU son

Edited due to realization that the Furrball journal was likely from another game.

Freddie's username is straight forward. He randomly uses Spanish words, sometimes completely unrelated to the situation at hand.

Elphaba's ([livejournal.com profile] didntchewgrass) is from a quote in the musical: "Oh, do I have something in my teeth? Okay, let's get this over with. No, I'm not seasick, yes, I've always been green, no, I didn't chew grass as a child."

Peter Bishop's ([livejournal.com profile] theotherpeter) is because [SPOILER REDACTED].

Hook's ([livejournal.com profile] cunningkingfish is from the wonderful Smee quote in the movie: "The cunning kingfish! The bad barracuda! A man so deep, he's almost unfathomable."

And finally, my lamest of the bunch: [livejournal.com profile] olympian_herc, which comes from the fact that its my 3rd journal for Herc and I apparently used up all my journal-naming mojo for him before this.

[identity profile] trickydemigod.livejournal.com 2011-06-23 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] trickydemigod is because a) Luke's father is the god of liars, tricksters and thieves, amongst other things and b) Luke ends up tricking and betraying the gods and wussy sect of demigods who don't want to destroy their parents for some reason.

[livejournal.com profile] rocksthescarf is because back in the day when Chuck first showed up to Fandom he constantly wore what was known as his trademark scarf. He gave it up during his senior year though 'cause that's what the show did.

[livejournal.com profile] wehateyouplzdie is directly from this (http://30.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l63bh8pMM21qzxtfbo1_500.png) panel from the first Scott Pilgrim book. It's in the movie as well.

[personal profile] brat_inslayage 2011-06-23 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
As usernames go this one is not my wittiest, I suspect, especially considering I also own [livejournal.com profile] kindofabrat, which is actually a quote, and [livejournal.com profile] yourkitestring, which is also a quote but also so not applicable yet, hi. I'm pretty sure I have at least three more that I can't remember, on top of that. I have a problem, I know.

Look, I don't have a whole lot of quotable material or that many canon things to refer to that make good usernames. But, y'know. Kennedy is a self-proclaimed brat, and she is in training, so it was apropos if boring, and also it matched [livejournal.com profile] life_inshadow's username. Which was not intentional, but I think accidental themes are amusing.

[personal profile] endsthegame 2011-06-23 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] endsthegame and [livejournal.com profile] lockestheway are the insanely pretentious ones that I picked because the names have a myriad of meanings; I went with Peter's this way because I do love a good scheme. His alter ego on the internet is Locke, Locke winds up defining how the future goes, ie he 'locks the way' and, Peter always feels his way is the right way, IE Locke's the way. /nerd

[identity profile] badnewsandwit.livejournal.com 2011-06-23 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I had the hardest time coming up with a username for Alistair ([livejournal.com profile] ofthe_wilds encouraged options such as 'licks_lampposts'). This is a simplified version of how he describes himself in the game at one point; "That's what I'm here for. To deliver unpleasant news and witty one-liners."

Considering the crap he gets into and the constant joking around, it fits.

I'mma be bratty and do everyone ever here, including the ones I no longer play.

Now:

Xander
[livejournal.com profile] soldtoarmenians: Buffy: "Have you ever done an exchange program?" / Xander: "My dad tried to sell me to some Armenians once. Does that count?"
[livejournal.com profile] needsaparrot: came from the need for an eyepatchy journal for 7-years-older townie Xander. Xander: "I might need a parrot." / Willow: "Huh?" / Xander: "Well, to go with the eyepatch, to really complete the look."
[livejournal.com profile] missestwinkies: was his [livejournal.com profile] fh_wishverse journal. Isolated vampire-riddled island is isolated, dead twinkiephone-making Bridge is dead.

Francine
[livejournal.com profile] thatsamilkshake: It's a visual.
[livejournal.com profile] thatsabigstake: was her [livejournal.com profile] fh_wishverse journal, and will never cease to childishly amuse me. Also, our main NPC journal for the toongirls is [livejournal.com profile] dirtylily - most of the people played out of it have the same tattoo as Katchoo and Francine - while their futurekid Lillian is [livejournal.com profile] notdirtylily.

Bo
[livejournal.com profile] nookiepowered is actually a quote from the incoming [livejournal.com profile] regretiz4suckas; Bo and Kenzi are moving furniture and Kenzi complains that "Not all of us are nookie-powered amazons, you know."

Cally (who's heading off next week, but still counts as a current character)
[livejournal.com profile] onlymistaken: Cally: "We have a saying among my people: a man who trusts can never be betrayed; only mistaken." / Avon: "Life expectancy must be fairly short among your people."

Those who have gone before:

[livejournal.com profile] notajar: Door of the House of Arch. When is a door not a door? When it's...
[livejournal.com profile] loverlyviolets: Eliza Doolittle. She sold them.
[livejournal.com profile] bitchy_smurf: Illyria. Wesley called her one (though he left the 'bitchy' as understood) and [livejournal.com profile] notasmurf was taken. Plus FH has a fine tradition of usernames with 'bitch' in them.
[livejournal.com profile] hazlehurstmiss: Emmett Honeycutt. He's from Hazlehurst, Mississippi, and it's a not-too-subtle nod to the fact that Emmett is not-too-subtle. Plus mississippiqueen is one letter too long for LJ's user-name limits. Dammit.

ETA dear God, [livejournal.com profile] prof_of_cunning: Edmund Blackadder (unlike Baldrick's plan that we never got to hear) is as cunning as a fox who's just been appointed Professor of Cunning at Oxford University. Or in this case, Fandom High.

Ahahaaha:

[livejournal.com profile] karaoke_lizard: [livejournal.com profile] willbedone and I adopted Lorne and co-played him in his townie phase for about 5 minutes in 2006. As with all things, BLAME STEVE.
