beautifulsenshi came about because ai_no_senshi was taken on LJ. If you don't understand why that would have been funny/punny, ask me and I'll explain it later.

Her first name, Minako (美奈子), contains the kanji for "beautiful" (美, mi) and "child" (子, ko), along with 奈 (na), a phonetic character. "Minako" can alternatively be read as Venus (Biinasu). Also, her surname is a pun on a phrase meaning "of love," making her name sound like "Venus of Love" and can translate to "Beautiful Child of Love." She's also often introduced as the Senshi (Soldier) of Love and Beauty in the show, hence her LJ handle.

pulseof_life was originally created for a different Final Fantasy character and I was flailing around, working on Yeul’s app and hitting brick walls on any possible username when I decided to take a look through my already made journals out of desperation and found one that was perfect. Yeul lives on the planet known as Gran Pulse and she’s never, ever going to stop living. (I considered pulseof_death, which also would have been accurate, but felt Yeul’s personality suits life better…)

genesishero’s fault. I didn’t know what to use and she suggested it and I was all ‘well, no, maybe?’ and could never think of anything better, so I went with it because it amused me.

She’s not a Coke person because her Hero persona is owned and marketed by Pepsi!

puppyinacup - So okay I am generally pretty terrible at usernames. And when all the obvious names were taken, I started trying to think of quotes that I could crib from. The one that really kept coming to mind was the scene where Jess had a PMS-induced breakdown during a job interview over a tiny puppy that she found out had died and started sobbing and I just love it so much. And that episode ended up being where I'm bringing her in from, so that accidentally worked out nicely.

haslayers - Same basic story: everything taken, go for quotes. And I remembered the one where Xander was all surprised Cordelia did so well on her SAT's and her answer was "What, I can't have layers?" Plus it also looks like "ha slayers" which is appropriate.

mummyspromdate - That's what Maddie thinks her special black bandage costume makes her look like.

notconflicted - I made Nick come up with this, because I was clueless. In the comic Sia talks to her boyfriend about conflicting loyalties and all and how she doesn't have those, and la. Not a very interesting story.

throughaphase - I totally started trying to come up with something playing on her phasing powers, and amazingly this wasn't taken. And it works, because at the point I took her from she's very much in a phase with the not wanting to be an X-Man and the bartending in leather and all.

annieadderall - The mean nickname Annie got called in high school, because she was an Adderall addict. I must have done something good in a past life to get this.

solo_sword - Originally she was trickster_twin for her role in the Vong War, but when she got past that it didn't really apply anymore. So I changed it to this, because she's the Sword of the Jedi and her last name's Solo and I am clever. Also I like alliteration.

fates_jaye - Jaye calls herself fate's bitch in canon, and of course it was taken. Being that I got her like at the beginning of the game, I just went with this because for some reason I was afraid someone else would app her? Idk.

PUPPY. IN A. CUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUP.

There's a bit of dialogue early in the first season that goes a little like this:

Bay: *Rolls eyes, stomps away*
Daphne: What's with her?
John: That's just ... Bay being Bay.
Toby: And some other things that start with B.

Which, first, is a funny quote to use. And second, one of the things Bay talks about a lot in the first season is how much she appreciates environments where she's not Toby's sister or the girl who got switched or John Kennish's daughter: She can just be Bay, and that's awesome. Fandom's another space that's like that for her.

My character names almost always come from a quote from the canon by or about the character.

Priestly's is

lovemykilt because "ilovemykilt" was taken, and it's what he says when Jen declares that he's discovered his feminine side.

Pinkie's is

locointhecoco because of this, which, though directed at Rainbow Dash, is actually entirely true about Pinkie herself (a fact that was then quite nicely backed up third season by this).

Raven's was harder. I think "mutantandproud" was totally already taken? (It is the obvious choice, after all.)

tigerundercover comes from a pivotal scene for her character, when she decides she's going to seduce Magneto (because why not?) and he refuses her until she's in her natural blue shape. "Would you see a tiger and want to cover it up?" (Or something to that effect, I actually can't find that scene on YouTube, wtf?) I went through a couple awkward permutations before landing on "tigerundercover".

This is either a terrible pun or an awesome one, I haven't decided which yet. Anyhow, Alana's from Landfall, which is one of the key planets in Saga. One of the canon nicknames for people from Landfall's moon Wreath is moonie. Alana's not from Wreath, hence not_a_moonie.

She's also not a member of the Unification Church. If that concerned anyone.

failsatspirit refers to the fact that Korra is pretty faily at the spiritual aspect of being the Avatar.

NPCS

knew_the_rules for Tenzin refers to Lin responding to him getting very un-Zen at a crooked umpire by saying she 'didn't know he knew the rules of pro-bending'

bent_the_rules for Lin was basically to make her match Tezin's username and also a sidewise pun about her being a cop and a bender.

notquitethelast for Aang was because he wasn't the last airbender any more.

icecoldfrost is simply a play on Emma's last name and her nature. There's too many canonical references to Emma's cold heart to count, although I referenced my favorite one for her AU journal,

cold_hard_heart: "I've had quite enough of these painful emotions....no empathy, no compassion, just a cruel sense of humor and a cold, hard heart."

Izzy's username dates back to her days as a PW guest last fall, and I remember it was kind of ridiculously easy to pick. It's a modified quote, la:

"I do not understand how you humans can walk in shoes that are that tall." "It's my motto," said Isabelle, with a sultry smile. "'Nothing less than seven inches.'"
Meliorn gazed at her stonily.
"I'm talking about my heels," she said. "It's a pun. You know? A play on ––"

And it's pretty Izzy-like with reference to her appearance as well as her flirty nature, and I still love it.

The miniseries actually changes this scene quite a bit, and leaves the bit about Ghanima out entirely, but she is very much the Atreides Lioness as she walks down those stairs, prepared to defend her brother and the Golden Path from any and all who would dare abuse their power.

I think it's my favorite out of all my usernames.

harpy_daughter comes from the fact that Surreal's mother, Titian, has become the Queen of the Harpies in Hell. Not that Surreal knows this - yet - but it also fits because Surreal herself is kinda bitchy sometimes.

Jack's students in canon call her the psychotic biotic to tease her, on account of a)she has biotic powers and b)she's a tad unhinged. I couldn't believe it wasn't taken, so I went with it. (I know, dull story.)

shippedtomaine comes from a quote where Regina responds to Charming suggesting being less crazy-pants might help with Henry by telling him that she "will not listen to childcare lectures from a man who put his daughter in a box and shipped her to Maine."

From the Young Allies miniseries, because Nomad kept calling her "Venomette" due to her new costume.

And venomette was taken, of course.

Jack Priest got his name because Jack's whole thing with Sebastien involved getting bitten, and he is not in the least shy in any sense. Plus, I liked the idea of riffing on a saying. Now he's a werewolf ... and still not shy.

Tara Maclay got

life_inshadow from Tara's big song in "Once More with Feeling." It made sense to me as her username because at the precanon point I was taking her from, a lot of her life had been very shadowy and repressed. She's not so much in shadow these days , but I couldn't imagine changing it.

Victor Mancha is Ultron's kid, and no matter what he does, he's never going to quite get away from that. Hence

ultron_junior.

One of my absolute favorite parts of Les Misérables is where Éponine stops her father and the Patron-Minette gang from breaking into Valjean's house (Marius and Cosette happen to be in the garden at the time); it's kind of a huge pivotal moment for her, where she finally discovers the agency to develop her own sense of morality rather than just keep going along with what she's been taught her whole life (I reblog a whole lot of photosets of this chapter on Tumblr).

In the musical, she screams to warn Valjean and scare off the thieves, but in the book she never actually does. She threatens to, and basically just stands there in front of the gate laughing at them and daring them to come at her:

[Thénardier] spat the word at her: "Bitch!"

She laughed derisively.

"Say what you like, you aren't going in. I'm not a dog's daughter but a wolf's. There are six of you, six men and I'm one woman, but I'm not afraid of you. myownface: Actually comes from a pretty intense quote in Habitat, one of Sparkle's monologues, where he acknowledges that the world believes he doesn't care about anything, except his face is what he sees on the television, watching the news, when he sees the horrors that people can commit upon one another. "I look at their faces and I see my own face."

gunslingerpose: Nikolai's a bit of a showoff, and he thinks of himself as a bit of a Wild West Sheriff in canon. He enjoys striking poses, once he starts his heroing gig. They're named. The gunslinger pose is by far his favourite.

Chaz's is a reference to how his canon nickname is platypus because all of his features taken separately are cool but when put together kind of dont make sense. Like a platypus. But he's not there yet. (Can I also take a moment to whine about how the latest episode is now three months late?)

Darcy - taseredagod - did in fact taser a god.

Marco - morpherboy - was the one to coin the term Animorphs (though his definition was teenagers with a death wish). So I stole half of that and added boy because he is one. I go for the obvious.

Alanna - threeweapons - comes from a line in Kel's series. A grown up Alanna with teenage kids of her own by this point takes on a mouthy squire. Said squire once complains that she has three weapons - her sword, her knife, and her tongue.

I don't remember Cimorene's or Anathema's or Diana oh wait I do remember.

Diana's Oops_mbad was basically her standard reaction to things happening around her with a smudge of "I totally meant to do that"

As many as I can in one because my lunch is only so long, which it should be noted is what she said.

craftyladyparts is because of a truly wonderful conversation between Jessica and Peter in Ultimate Doom. Somebody was trying to destroy Peter's life and Jess was clearly involved somehow (as another victim, as was clear to the reader immediately) and he confronted her about it since, really, they didn't know each other very well aside from the whole thing where she is him, up to a certain point. During the conversation, the subject of the differences between them came up. The two big ones? She's apparently craftier than him, and that is presumably because she has "ladyparts." I love Bendis forever for this conversation.

notapredator is because according to KOTOR II's big bad, Mira isn't one. Also because I made that journal forever ago on a whim and never looked for a better one. It's good enough to avoid the extra effort!

willbethenight is a reference to the iconic "I am vengeance! I am the night! I am BATMAN!" And it was very applicable when Bruce was a student. I may have to change the username now, though.

amthenight should now be an obvious explanation.

Doom's new username is

allhopeliesinme because, as the time-traveling Future Franklin Richards told his younger sister, Present Day Valeria Richards, "ALL HOPE LIES IN DOOM." If not for Doom's abilities, immeasurable arrogance, and utter disbelief that even a god could challenge him, Earth would have been destroyed by the Mad Celestials, giant angry space gods from space. If you ever get a chance, read Hickman's Fantastic Four and FF. They're great.

"I AM DOOM. DESTROYER OF WORLDS. WHAT GODS DARE STAND BEFORE ME." Seriously, Hickman. Awesome.

trigons_child: Trigons_Daughter (which she was often called) was too long, so since Raven was supposed to be the only child of the demon Trigon the Terrible, I went with this. Then DC retconned her six brothers into existence. Except now in DC52 there are only three brothers. IDEK.

demonbelthazor: His name is Belthazor and he's a demon. So original it BURNS.

blessed_twice: Wyatt's birth was prophesied with "When three planets burn as one over a sky of dancing light, and magic will rest for a holy day to welcome a twice-blessed child." Twice_blessed was taken, so I went with blessed_twice.

fairest_blood: I was kinda amazed this one wasn't taken for Snow, since it seems pretty obvious. As the Queen tells Snow: "By fairest blood it was done and only by fairest blood can it be undone. You were the only one who could break the spell and destroy me."

batwaffles -- Steph eating waffles is a running gag all through her Batgirl run; it's supposed to sort of be symbolic of her rebuilding her relationship with her mother, but it's also just a running gag. That's literally all, but in retrospect, considering the Bat-something terminology for everything else, there's another joke in there.

brat_inslayage -- Because it's accurate. Kennedy's a self-proclaimed brat. It was originally brat_intraining, but since she's an actual Slayer now I kind of felt compelled to pay up for the rename token or it was going to bug me forever.

weetuskenraider -- Tahiri was adopted at a very young age by the Tusken Raiders on Tatooine. She is (or was, anyway) really short. So, la.

time_flyer_5 -- The result of me misremembering the way the Time Force Rangers' Zords were named, oops. Wes had the Time Jet, so Jen's Zord was actually Time Flyer 4. Or Time Flier. Make up your minds, writers, I say 13 years later.

The now-gone

nonelikemesince -- During the Fate of the Jedi series, Luke and Ben have this encounter with Anakin's spirit and one of the things Ben tells him is that there hasn't been another Jedi like him in the Order since he died. I originally created the journal as an NPC for Tahiri during the first Field of Dreams plot, and then when I apped him I kept it since it did foreshadow his fate.

CURRENT ONES FIRST:

sith_happened was Anakin after I'd sent him all the way through RoTJ minus the being dead part and brought him back to Fandom because, well, Sith had happened.

makemyownway is a quote from Cade where he's in an argument with ghost!Luke, who is urging him to fulfill his destiny as Lukes are wont to do and Cade tells him, "Kark destiny. I make my own way." There's another Cade already using "karkdestiny."

rilla_myrilla is a play on Rilla's nickname of Rilla-my-Rilla that Walter, then Ken use as a pun on her given name of Marilla.

texted3times was a quote from Eric to Beeeeell when Bill comes into Bill's house to find Eric lounging in his bathtub (Eric has boundary issues). He was told "I texted three times" when Bill demanded to know what he was doing there.

professor_lyman is from the very first year of the game and as such is wicked uncreative. Also "finestmuffinsandbagels" is too long.

ALUMNI:

momslilassassin was for when Ben was a wee solemn 14 year old mama's boy when he arrived and became an assassin before lunch because Star Wars and realism don't mix. It doesn't fit him as well any more but I can't imagine changing it.

tatooine_doofus is because Luke is from Tatooine and as hard as he tries, is still a bit of a doof. Ben's NPC Luke is

notsoreckless because he's grown out of some of the impulsiveness Yoda disapproved of in fifty years or so. (Some but not all...)

bloody_luck was for Mat Cauthon because he curses extensively ("bloody" is his go-to), he has amazing luck, and back home his luck tends to get him stuck onto bloody battlefields. Poor Mat.

Among other things, Vider is:

1. A berserker, traditionally associated with bears
2. A girl in her teens, who would be referred to as a maid or maiden in her society
3. Extremely fair of coloring

So I was playing around with these and other possible factors trying to come up with a username and this one popped into my head and my thought process went "Oh. Oh that's terrible. Is it free? I have to use it."

One of this movie's great oversights is the total lack of Jaegermeister/Jaegerbomb jokes. So I wanted to correct that.

Also Striker Eureka is the only Jaeger we see with missiles so it actually works.

suitablyheroic is, like many of the following usernames, entirely to be blamed on my love of stealing quotes for usernames. Sadly many of Atton's best quotes are un-usernameable, so I went with the one I could use. It's actually from the very end of KotOR II, when Our Heroes minus the Main Hero attempt to show how much they've learned about Jedi-ing by surprise-attacking the villain themselves. Every one of them wanders in with some earnest but in-your-face HA! badass line. Then Atton shows up. "And here I come in, saying something suitably heroic."

Dude just can't resist even in the face of possible annihilation, man.

lockestheway was an attempt to manage a similar punny Escher painting username like

endsthegame. Peter's Locke, Locke's the way, Peter locks the way forward, blah blah blah sometimes I think I'm clever.

fewerexplosions is another quote one from the first Mass Effect game. During squad banter, Liara gets questioned about the whole being-an-archaeologist-versus-what-they're-doing-now thing. She answers differently based on which squadmate you bring, but it's always a variation on 'I would prefer longer studies and fewer explosions.' Which is basically Liara in a nutshell, at least at the start of the series, though she's not afraid to get her hands dirty.

not_a_whiner is yet another quote one. In the first game, you can get Kaidan to open up about his past, but it requires some effort. Later, he explains why - it's because he doesn't want you thinking that he's, uh, a whiner. (This is an IG reference to another character Kaidan's VO played in a previous game. Said character got the reputation of beinga whiner.)

nomeatvirgin Ron Swanson is not a meat virgin. Period.

fjordicswagger soon and I'm kind of proud of that combination of 'nordic', 'swagger', and dead parrot sketch referencing, so I'm going to mention that right here despite the not-yet-apped status of the character herself, ha.

That's one of the many times in canon Alex is compared to Nikita. She's even referred to as Little Nikita at one point. So that's how this username happened.

In the show, Daphne can pretty much do anything as long as she has her purse. One of my friends said she was "MacGyver with a purse".

seeks_the_stars wasn't what I wanted for Jim's username but almost everything was taken. So, Jim ended up seeks_the_stars because he's seeking the stars when he goes into space for his mission of exploration.

necroslacker is still one of my favorites of all time. Sam's a slacker and a necromancer and I just combined the words. Simple but I've always liked it.

nimeni is what Miss Lupescu calls Nobody in The Graveyard Book. In Romanian, it means nobody.

seaweed_demigod is another simple one. Percy's a demigod and his powers come from water and there's seaweed in the ocean thus, seaweed_demigod.

stupid_toasters isn't an active playing journal but I still love the username because the Cylons are nicknamed toasters and Lee hates them so they are stupid.
