BDE: Something Wicked This Way Comes

...and it's not Elphaba this time.

On the evening of Thursday, August 7th, the scent of cotton candy will permeate the island in the midst of a thunderstorm. The next morning, on Friday, August 8th a carnival will arrive in Fandom's park and open up for business, offering carousel rides and fortune tellers and anything you could possibly imagine!

Fun, right?

Except by the time night falls, it'll become apparent that this is no ordinary carnival. Rides and attractions will turn out to have murderous intent - or in some cases, intent to warp your mind and body. The carousel will age you up or age you down. The targets at the shooting alley will come to life and try to kill you. The mirror maze will drive you mad.

Anyone who becomes a victim of the carnival will become a carnival act themselves - meaning death isn't permanent, but will put the denizens of Fandom into a strange state, believing they have been part of the carnival forever and their purpose is malevolent. What acts will they become? Well, that's up to you!

Okay, but what acts will there be to start with?

Good question! There will be:

• A carousel that ages you up or down depending on which direction it goes in;
  
• A mirror maze that shows you versions of who you could be - and they won't usually be happy, preying on what you fear most about yourself;
  
• A shooting alley with targets that grow and come alive and start roaming the carnival in search of someone to kill;
  
• A fortune teller that actually sees the future. Or, at least, one version of the future. You may not like what you see;
  
• Fair food that has inherent addictive properties, keeping you eating until that's all you care about in the world and you won't want to leave the food stand's side;
  
• A deadly ferris wheel that can come loose and kill all sitting on it;
  
• A knife-thrower who can suddenly turn on his audience.

Anything else is up for grabs for anyone who wants to become a carnival act. Muhahahaha.

So how can I be a part of this?

At the first sign of trouble, Fandom will turn to its trusty crew of researchers! Anyone willing to hit the books and try to unearth the history of the carnival and what can be done to stop it is welcome, seeing as how smashing parts of the carnival doesn't seem to do it any real harm - it will magically reassemble itself on the spot, immediately.

Our finale this time will be largely up to individual Fandomites - there won't be an organized strike team or anything of the like. Closer to the date, we'll announce what the solution is, and we will need some volunteers to take on the various NPCs in our (non-fighty) finale. But we'll talk about that later (and offer sign-ups when we do). Those scenes can be preplayed.

Finally, you can, of course, sign up to become a carnival act! Characters can begin transforming on the night of the 8th, meaning they'll be a part of the OCD on the 9th, but they can continue doing so throughout Saturday and even on Sunday morning. Please sign up below to give us some indication of what you'll be turning into and when you plan to do so. The deadline for these sign-ups is Tuesday, August 5th, but if you won't know when until the date itself, it's fine to edit your sign-up to reflect that. We just need to know for OCD purposes!

Characters will be turned back at varying points during the finale on Sunday, August 10th, when various non-carnivally Fandomites can start deploying the cure in person.

Second: Say if Barry got caught up in the mirror maze would he be caught up and turn into a carnie or would he still be available to do research?

Okay I am loving this and I have a question for clarification's sake!

My girl can totally roll her own creepy given some de-aging, but I am not sure how to make that into an Official Carnival Act, like, being a firebreather or trapeze artist or what-have-you.

Can a turned-carnie just hover around the edges, binge on cotton candy, and lunge at people, or do I need a shtick?

... and if it's the latter, what can I have a grubby Little Sister do? Because I am totally Little Sistering it up, you guys.

Just for clarification's sake, how thorough can these transformations be? I know the carousel ages people up/down, but would it affect people's powers, or give powers to people who don't have them? How about, say, a guy coming into this with no chest or lower jaw? Could he reasonably end up with one come the transformation's end, just to turn back upon being hugged, or are severe physical changes like that not part of the deal?

Sparkle is totally going to be manning a rigged carnival games booth. Step right up and throw a dart at a balloon on the wall! Pop the balloon, win a prize!

Prizes vary from free ride admission to creepy stuffed animals that just straight up come alive and try to kill you. Have fun with that.

Oh! And I'd like to have Sparkle all nice and neatly transformed by the 9th, please!

Celia will be an illusionist doing tricks , just as she is in canon. However, instead of making pretty vague filigree and glass sculptures and turning her coat into blackbirds, she'll be showing you your worst nightmares.

(And general creepy things. But if anyone wants a full-blown nightmarescape immersion for a few minutes, that is totally, totally doable.)
