Dear Fandom: Happy birthday to you, you are pretty much a zoo, you have stolen 9 years of our lii-iiives, and most of our brain cells too!

In honor of Fandom High's 9th anniversary, we're dipping back a few years into the past to steal a meme from...ourselves. As somebody pointed out, it's easier to answer when you've got more than one possible reply to "Favorite BDE."

Hi, everyone. Game. It's me, Nick. Thanks for nine great years. Even though I have less free time because of work these days, you're still my favorite hobby to come home to, with the notable exception of creating a Counter a earth on the opposite side of the sun. Once my Animen have gained human intelligence, I will bring hem into the game as well, and then you'll have the fun of playing with a Ratman playing Mickey Mouse or some such.

Anyway, I have to get back to my desk now. But once again, thank you all. I can't wait until next year, when we blow up the planet Earth. You guys know that's why I'm creative Counter Earth, right? If you didn't, that's a little FYI.

*squishes everyone* Holy crap nine years. How.

And I will be back for more celebration stuff later when work isn't eating my head because somewhere along the line we started duping the world into thinking we were, like, adults, you guys. BECAUSE NINE YEARS.

Dear Game,

You've made me laugh. You've made me cry. You've given me an outlet for creativity that allows me to collaborate with some truly gifted individuals.

And some crazy ones. Sometimes they're both.

And even though I've left once or twice, you let me come back to play and for that I am always grateful.

Also if you can find a way to get me Nick's counter-earth before the world explodes next year I'd appreciate it.

NINE YEARS. I thought I'd be here for a month or so...and nine years, three countries and two kids later I'm still here.

Love you guys :)

I've now been here for five years and this game has meant the world to me. Countless hours spent laughing, crying, beating my head against the wall, brainstorming, cackling, yelling...It's wonderful knowing that no matter what is going on in my life at any moment, I can always slip in here and this place with it's wonderful, cracktastic, heart-breaking characters will be here. Thank you all so much for an amazing five years for me and a mind-boggling 9 overall. I hope we're here in another nine, just as amazed that we've made it this long.

I don't even know what to say here, so forgive me some rambling. Just over eight and a half years ago, I was watching by bestie back in Edmonton as she played Hamlet in some kind of Plotting Zoo event in some sort of LJ-based RPG. I had no idea that LJ could be used that way, and was properly intrigued, because, dudes, the sheer crack that I was witnessing was freaking epic. There was an app period coming up for the second semester in the game, and I figured, hey, it'd be a fun way to kill some time. So I came up with an app form for Macbeth (because come on, when your bestie plays Hamlet, what else are you to do?) and away I went.

Fast-forward to now. Characters have come and gone (and come back again, in some cases) and so have players in the game. But I've made friends - so many friends, some of whom have been part of the most fantastic support net I have ever seen - and I've had a hell of a lot of fun, and tears, and a few instances of just screaming outright at a computer monitor for one reason or another, but I wouldn't trade my time here for anything.

Well, maybe a million dollars. I would probably trade my time here for a million dollars. And then I'd be able to start over again without the bury-my-head-in-the-sand shame of having played a version of Macbeth who says 'Ach!' all of the time.

I wish to share with you my favorite gif on the entire internet, which I only just rediscovered. It is apropos of nothing but that I hope it makes you laugh.

I know I haven't been very active lately (that will change in a few days, hopefully), but I couldn't let this day go by without commenting!

I am so thankful for this game and all the awesome people I met because of it. Happy Anniversary!!

Let's see:

Nine years ago, I was living in the Middle of Nowhere, East Bohemia, teaching English as a foreign language badly with only half an hour of internet access (which I paid for BY THE MINUTE) maybe four days a week and a television that my boss kept promising would get English language channels any day now but which mostly just had Legally Blonde dubbed into Czech (and don't think I didn't watch that over and over and over). Everything about that job that wasn't the students themselves sucked so completely hard, but somehow following the linked plugs posted to my LJ by a monkey with a jetpack and a pair of hornrimmed glasses to some game called "Fandom High" which I couldn't play because I ONLY HAD INTERNET ACCESS FOR HALF AN HOUR A DAY FOUR DAYS A WEEK was one of the most tremendous lows.

Of course, then it got swallowed in the whole "It snowed every day in November and the lock on the building I was living in would freeze and I couldn't get in and my boss sent me on an overnight teaching trip without prior warning and then yelled at me for not giving my STUDENTS prior warning and I HATE EVERYTHING" deal that was most of the three months I lived there and I forgot about it.

Then I came home. And still hated everything. And wrote some really moody, horrible fanfic. And worked several dead-end temp jobs.

And then that monkey with a jetpack and those hornrimmed glasses posted about applications for new students opening up at that Fandom High game and I was home and had ALL THE INTERNET ACCESS I NEEDED.

tl;dr: I was in a pretty shitty place in my life when I got to this game and it and everyone in it helped drag me back out and I love you all.

Also that time Johnny Storm 1.0 picked Jaina up for a date and when I came home from work all her boy cabinmates had harassed or threatened him and it was amazing.

The 'More Drama Than The Lifetime Channel' category: Nearly everything John and Aeryn ever did?

The 'I Just Have Something in My Eye!' category: First scene that ever made me cry was when I made Aeryn go home, and then I flailed all "WHY ARE YOU ALL CRYING WAIT I DIDN'T THINK THIS WOULD MAKE PEOPLE SAD" because that's when I realized we were all invested ICly and OOCly.

The 'I Gotta Just Pick Five?' category:

The 'WTF Where Did That Come From?' category: I don't think I expected any ship that my characters ever ended up in to happen. And some of my characters' friendships have been kind of random and awesome and unexpected. Aeryn and Rory, I'm looking at you.

The 'Oopsie!' category: I have pinged both weetiny!Jaina and D'Argo's 6-foot-long tongue icon into dirty scenes, go me!

The 'Fandom's In Trouble, Must Be Tuesday' category: Favorite BDE is definitely the Nothing, but I loved the old school stuff coming back for the dungeon.

The 'Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Banana?' category: I love that the OOC thread being the end of the world is such a thing that when I told Jakey that I didn't put an OOC thread on a party once just to see what would happen, she went back and added one in a month late.

Also I still giggle at scrapbooking. This will never not be funny. And I miss Ever the Same.

'And Now, The Weather': I want rain of rubber duckies. Or rain WITH rubber duckies. Admins, make it so.

Oh god, I cried ALL THROUGH the Nothing. Momoko's last call and death, Dinah's death (I teared up rereading to get this link), and Karla and Warren's breakup.

For threads I wasn't involved in, Didi's death and Death's talk with Jono gutted me. I didn't cry at Drake's death, but it was still beautifully, perfectly poignant.

'I Laughed So Hard I Cried!' I am completely on board with the above-linked Christmas pageant and floral hex because GOOD GOD we were on the good crack back then, guys. Holy. Shit.

Also, yes, any and all of our cross-dressing alter egos from back in the day. I have been scouring all my old links for any hint of Johnina, and I found this (http://fandomtownies.livejournal.com/1034294.html?thread=43888182#t43888182), wherein John and Rory (Ronald) are like...spying on Aeryn and Anakin at the brothel? I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT CRACK WE WERE ON BUT THIS SHIT IS INCREDIBLE, GUYS. Unfortunately this is also the days before tacking so all I can find is stuff I was involved in, BUT I'M GONNA KEEP LOOKING.

(Also the horrifying Ronald icon is long gone, thank god.)

'More Drama Than The Lifetime Channel' category God, I've tried to kill Sookie like...four times or something. I think that's probably got to be my answer there. Just like, every Sookie plot. Bonus points if someone else almost dies (Karla getting stabbed, Bobby getting blown up....)

OH and also that time when Anakin came back and he wasn't Darth Vader anymore (http://tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com/9800.html). That was pretty fucking sweet and really dramatic (and that's totally all Fry, I was just the pretty face who got to slap him.) And every time Rory visited his office hours prior to that.

Which all brings me to....

'I Just Have Something in My Eye!' Okay, you guys have known me for nine years. You know I'm a very capslocky, 'omg'-y, punctuation-y person. I cry all the damn time, is where I'm going with this. So, I cry at a lot of stuff in this game, including the above-linked Aeryn-goes-home thread (even though Rory and her many questions make me go "omg was I seriously RPing a toddler, what is this")

But nothing has made me sob like a wee, stupid child as when Anakin went home to canon (http://emo-padawan.livejournal.com/44150.html). Because at that point, SPOILERS, I don't think Fry had a plan to bring him back as Anakin, just as Vader for ALL THE AWESOME CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, so it so felt like we were all watching this character who we had all really, really come to love (even if we maybe didn't enjoy him much in canon, ahem), ICly and OOCly, head off to become one of pop culture's most iconic villains.

And that is a credit to Fry, mostly, and why R/A is my OTP forever even when I forget to play Rory for months on end and am a terrible fake wife.

(ALSO BONUS EVER THE SAME ICON SIGHTING, RIGHT THERE.)

'360': I seriously think every time I've had a character drop an 'I love you' it's been in the middle of a fight, out of nowhere, and the scene ended up being totally different for it. I can't think of any specific instances but that is basically like every ship I've had.

'WTF Where Did That Come From?' So that's like, 90% of my ships. I think Rory/Bridge was planned, because of great Anakin and Xander-respective angst, and then like, Sirius/Remus and Puck/Quinn because canon, but literally every other ship I've had has been kind of out of left field. (And in at least one case, I was actively resisting it because I had yet to embrace the incesty goodness that is multiple ships with one person.)

That being said, I also have some really WTFy and awesome friendships -- Rory and Aeryn is kind of the weirdest, but I've also always really, really loved Sookie 'I don't swear unless the plot calls for it, and sex is dirty (mostly)' Stackhouse being such close friends with Kennedy, of all people. I WILL THINK OF MORE BUT THOSE ARE MY TWO FAVORITE WEIRD ONES.
