Spring BDE - Cursed Item Sign-Ups

This post is for people wanting to claim cursed shiny objects, or for people to sign up offering priceless items to be stolen by their fellow Fandomites.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • You can get your cursed item any time between March 1st and March 24th. Early items will be much more gradual with poison and paranoia.

  • We are asking people to spread out when they obtain their items, so there isn't a particular rush either at the beginning or at the end. Of course, you could visit the shop early, find out the requirements for your item, agonize over the choice, and then return much later.

  • You will be able to rid yourself of the item during the week of the finale, if you choose to do so, but you cannot break the spell any earlier than March 24th, as that is part of what kick-starts the endgame. So if you're unsure how long you'd like to play with this insanity, get your item later rather than earlier.

  • One Fandomite will break the spell first, on March 24th, and tell the research team what has been happening. Sign up below if you'd like to be considered. The spot will be RNG'd, with special consideration given to anyone non-powered who does not typically get to be The Hero. After that person destroys his or her item, others are free to reject theirs as well.

  • Items are charmed in such a way that you absolutely do not want to tell other people where you got the item. If someone knows, that person could, somehow, steal the item from you, or make you take it back, and fuck that.

  • As mentioned earlier, the items are full of metaphysical poison. When you finally get rid of your item, you are going to be in a somewhat weakened state -- nothing that some fluids and rest won't fix. How bad it is depends on how matters play out for you during the finale week: breaking the spell early is better. People who hold on until the very end will be very sick indeed, and may need to spend the night in the clinic. Exactly how sick will be up to your discretion.

  • Shoppers in Needful Things are of course free to browse and leave empty-handed, or even shop at the store and purchase non-cursed items. In fact, that would make life more interesting later on ...

  • Any item related to your source canon must be cleared by your canonmates.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What kind of things does Leland have for sale?

There's a sample list to help with brainstorming here. Please note that it's just a sample list, intended to help with brainstorming.

What if what my character wants isn't a material good?

We're willing to get creative. Ping below (or e-mail us, if you'd rather) and we will do our best to work something out. For example, Sparkle wants to be taken in by a loving family, and Leland will be referring him to an off-the-books foster family that he knows. And expecting a favor in return, obviously.

What kind of things does Leland want?

Something literally priceless, that he can't get from anyone else. I.e. you can buy diamonds in a store, but no one but the royal family in Arendelle has any of the crown jewels of Arendelle.

Something magical, technical, or unusual. A strand of Rapunzel's hair. A drop of someone's blood. Weird things that he can study.

Information. It's his own personal catnip. Maybe your parents worked on a super-secret government mission, and you can get him some blueprints.

One thing he isn't interested in: sentimental value. Rinoa wears her mother's wedding ring on a chain, but that's not interesting to anyone except Rinoa. (Exception: Rinoa's mom was a minor celebrity, so that might be enough to stretch the point.)

What if I don't have an idea of what my character can offer Leland?

You can post below so that others who know your canon can help you think up something good. If we don't come up with anything, that's still fine! There will be a sign-up thread with people offering up items of theirs to be stolen for the cause; ping in there to claim one.

How many people can get items? Is there going to be an RNG?

No RNG. If you sign up wanting something, you can get it.

Sign-ups will close Saturday, March 7th at 11:59 PM PST.

Abbi isn't the sort to go nuts about material goods, but I wonder if Leland could hook her up with an art career. Could he maybe put her in touch with an illustration agent, or find her a great job? Or is that too abstract for what you're doing here?

Carmilla would want something connected to her long lost love, Ell. Since Ell ran away from Carmilla in fear and disgust when she found out what she was, maybe a letter saying Ell was sorry and still loved her?

Okay, so would it be too weird for Pinkie to find, like, old school My Little Pony toys in the shop? Like, I guess SUPER VAGUE and meta'd, but the idea of Pinkie basically finding a toy set of the mane six makes me giggle.

So, normally a love letter would fall under the heading of 'sentimental but not valuable', but what if that love letter were written by the Incarnation of Death and is likely the only one of it's kind in existence? Would that be enough for Leland?

Also, would be have a kind of mirror of Erised thing for sale? Say, in trade for a letter written by Death?

Hey - I would love for something for Drac, but he's very secure in his vampirism, being born to it and all. So I was thinking maybe the other subject that would make him go loopy is perhaps something about his dead wife? Maybe a picture or postcard that proved she actually survived the fire and thinks HE and MAVIS are dead?

I dunno. Ideas?

It's late, but I've been trying to think of something and that's all I can come up with that he wants and can't have- his Martha.

I have a few ideas of things Ichabod might want, but I have no idea what Leland might want from him. So, suggestions welcome.

I very much want Cosette to be in on this; I'd love for her to find a picture of a woman who looks like she thinks her mother did, but I have no idea what she could give in exchange for it.

I'm not sure if Amy has anything valuable. The best thing I can think of is that her best friend's boyfriend is the heir to Amy's world's equivalent of Google, so maybe some kind of company secret?

And what does Drac have that Leland would want? Well, he could spare a zombie or two?

Raven's chakra! By a close friend, preferably -- she'd have to trust a person to let them get that close to her without realizing the nature of their intent -- but I'm open to discussion (for example, someone as powerful a telepath as Emma has enough mental control to hide her emotions, etc.). It's also part of her, so it can't just be swiped easily. It has to be physically removed (in canon it was once bitten off).

Since her powers go haywire without it, towards the end of the plot is best. :)

THE SPICE!

Ghanima keeps it both in her suite at the Arms, and in her office at the school. While she never locks either door, she does have both key-and-puzzle locks on the medicine cabinet drawers.

You'd also need to either be 1) able to read Chinese to decipher her filing system or 2) know which drawer she keeps it in or be willing to steal a bit of everything, which would mean opening each and every lock. Or if Leland would know which one it's in, that's fine with me.

The one no-fudge rule I have about this is you do not sample the Spice before giving it to Leland. Ghanima keeps it in small vials in her cabinets, so there's no risk of 'accidental' inhaling or absorption through the skin.

Rapunzel's hair!

Pretty much anyone could yank a strand out in passing -- one thing to keep in mind is that it does turn brown and loses power when it's separated from her. (I mean, Leland's not going to care, but in theory your character might think it's broken or something.)

The one caveat is kind of silly -- I'm up for people yanking out a strand of her hair at the roots, not cutting it, mostly for "turns brown and loses power" reasons.

Okay, so Tamsin's hair isn't quite as potent as Rapunzel, but it still has handwavey-not-quite-explained-by-canon power for potions and the like. (When one of a Valkyrie's lives comes to an end, she starts losing hair every time she uses her powers. Tamsin's at that stage, yes, and hasn't used her powers for that reason for some time.)

So if anyone wants to steal hair from the mayor, that's open too!

Not ~*~magical~*~ per se, but let's say Amy has a prototype of a brand-new Skwerkel tablet (her world's version of Google) that's yet to come to market but will be huge in her world when it does. She'll have it in her room, so this should probably be stolen by a student.

I think (thiiiiink) I'm not going to sign Bo up for a cursed item, since she's been a baddie in several recent BDEs, but I am super cool with donating her Koushang for thievery.

NOT DIRTY. It's an amulet that protects the wearer against having their chi drained by a succubus, which Bo, Kenzi, Toby and Mitchell went to a lot of trouble to steal, a few years back.

Kenzi already has another target for her own thievery, so it's open to pretty much anyone who'd like to break/sneak/apparate into Bo/Kenzi/Roland's place at 43 Unicorn to steal it and trade it to Leland for something they want.

Open to stealing by all students!

Minako never keeps her door locked. Why bother? Besides, she has a cat that needs to go in-and-out.

Up for stealing are either Minako's magical (http://s71.photobucket.com/user/tsuki_poison/media/future%20projects/sailor%20V/63-64.png.html) compact (http://36.media.tumblr.com/41d4b328c06553e6f035a674a8005af5/tumblr_n6205gaKLT1qjkedbo1_500.jpg) or a red envelope containing a torn-up Ace of Hearts, which was Minako's final fortune cast by her stalker/idol/enemy/reincarnated never-lover, which cursed her to always put duty before love. And then he disintegrated on her.

Girl got issues, yo.

Just don't open the compact and point it AT Leland, or you'll see his true nature. Unless ya'll want to play with that, then go wild.

Vider has an apple of immortality. They're normally only accessible to the gods, but Loki keeps trying to give her one and she keeps trying to get rid of it (and, because Loki, it keeps finding its way back).

Since it's usually somewhere in her room, it's available for any student to steal.

If an item Leland wants is successfully handed over, will that item be returned by the end of the plot?

Raven's chakra might be something he'd love to get his hands on (priceless and magical!), but if it was taken from her, she'd need it back eventually because it helps her to control her powers.
