SUMMER SESSION 1 WORKSHOP SIGN-UP

Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone! It's time to sign up for your Summer 2016 Session 1 Workshops! These sign-ups are for both NEW and RETURNING students (but not graduating seniors. Believe me, I've made that mistake many, many years in a row...)!

Please read the following before you start signing up:

1) Teacher and Student Class Expectations! The all important guideline for what is expected of the players in Fandom High. Please give it a once-over even if you've seen it in some form or other before - consider it a good thing to click and read while I put up the OCD!

2) Japanese characters, please sign up in the Western style - given name, then family name - to make our alphabetical OCDing easier.

3) PC classes are those taught by a teacher character, the things you're signing up for here, as opposed to the NPC classes, which are discussed in their own thread towards the end of this post.

The Important Stuff About Signing Up For Classes

1) Each student character MUST sign up for at least 2 PC classes. Each player may only sign up for a MAXIMUM of 8 PC classes, spread among your student characters in any way you choose, as long as each has the minimum of 2. (Yes, this means that if you only have one student, you could sign them up for 8 classes. Just think carefully about whether you have the availability to handle that.)

2) For any classes that exceed their maximum numbers:

a. If you have two characters signed up for one class, one will be ousted (so make a note of who you'd prefer to get the spot).
b. Student characters played by the teacher of the class will also get ousted.
c. Students who have already taken the same class from the same teacher will also be eliminated, so please note in your ping if you're attempting to repeat the course.
d. If the class still has too many, the Random Number Generator (RNG) will be used to determine the roster from the remaining sign-ups. If you have been RNG'd out, we will let you know as soon as possible so you can choose a second alternative.

3) If you're a TA for a class, you need to sign up for that class. It will count towards your minimum 2 / maximum 8 courses. Please note TA-ship in the sign-up, so the character won't be counted towards the class-maximum of 20 students. Teachers: please refrain from having your own character act as the TA as it defeats the purpose of having a back-up player to post for you!

4) If it's OOC for your character to take a class but you really want to take it anyway, just sign them up and we'll pretend it was an IG paperwork mishap.

5) If you sign up, you need to show up. Class attendance is how we keep track of your character's activity. If you repeatedly fail to at least sign in to your classes, we'll have to contact you about it, and you could be asked to leave the game.

6) Class descriptions are subject to change at the teacher's discretion.

7) To be fair to people in all time-zones, sign-ups are not first-come, first-serve. Excess numbers in classes will be whittled down with the handy-dandy Random Number Generator (RNG).

And now we get to what you really want to see: Summer Classes!!!!

FH class sign-ups will close at 11:59pm Eastern on Thursday, May 5th. No late sign-ups will be allowed without extenuating circumstances or prior arrangements, so sign up early in case something comes up! If you don't sign up on time, you'll have to wait until the fall to play, woe.

General FYI: Feel free to make changes to your class choices as long as you do it before the deadline. We use the final pings in each thread to make the class lists, not the email notifs. MONDAY

MON: Period 1: Music Appreciation (Lecter & Starsmore)

An exploration of social and psychological themes in music, from the Renaissance to the modern era, with an introduction to instrumentation and composition elements. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of musical styles and topics encompassing shared themes that have been universal to humanity throughout history.

MON: Period 2: Flight & Flying (A. Skywalker & Solo)

For the next time angry aliens from outer space attack! (Attention new kids: Yes, really.) Learn to fly all kind of starships from two of the best pilots their galaxy has ever seen (if one of them does say so himself).

MON: Period 3: Extreme PE (Bond)

Ordinarily, legal liability, insurance law, and common sense prevent teenagers from partaking in some of the more out there sports and activities people have created, but thanks to the Danger Shop (and more importantly its safety protocols) students can experience the adrenaline rush for themselves.

MON: Period 4: Building Healthy Relationships (Carlysle)

Relationships take work, whether you’re talking about family, friends, or romantic partners. They require both people to be honest and willing to compromise, and to not run away when times get tough unlike some people I could name. This workshop is all about the building blocks for a healthy relationship!

TUESDAY

TUES: Period 1: Working the Con (Constantine)

The Game. A con, a scam, a grift, a hustle, a bunko, a swindle, a flimflam, a gaffle or a bamboozle. When life gives you suckers, of course you make lemonade.

A confidence artist - or con artist - is someone who exploits characteristics of the human psyche such as dishonesty, honesty, vanity, compassion, credulity, irresponsibility, naïveté, or greed.

In other words, 90% of humanity is a con artist. But not necessarily good ones.

Whether you're looking to play the game or want to learn how not to end up as the mark, this class will look at famous con men (and women) and their games, to see how and why they work.

NOTE: Due to the lack of verbal filter, any class with John Constantine should be considered PG-13 on a regular basis, due to swearing. You are warned.

TUES: Period 2: Off The Grid: Laying Low for Beginners (Jarrus)

You have a tendency to get into trouble. Whether it's trouble you brought down on your own head or not, you'd like to keep out of it for a while. That's where this class comes in. Covering everything from keeping an eye on your exits to assumed identities, this class aims to give students the basics for keeping their head down and trouble falling square into any lap but theirs.

TUES: Period 3: Beat The Heat: Indoor Activities 101 (Hardison)

There are tons of classes about what you can do outside during the summer (like a chump), but what if you're interested in activities that let you enjoy yourself without dealing with bugs, sunburns, sand in delicate places, wild animals, and other people? Hardison will cover a bunch of fun basic indoor activities that can kill several hours without ever having to deal with the accursed daystar.

WEDNESDAY

WED: Period 1&2: Modern Shakespeare (Karla)

Shakespeare sometimes gets a rep for being pretentious and snobby and hard to follow, especially amongst high schoolers. Funny thing is, Shakespeare's actually full of puns, dick jokes, and questions about life, love, identity, and just how hard you should murder someone to get your way--stuff everyone can relate to. This is why so many Shakespearean plays have been modernized and retold. This class will watch a modern retelling of a Shakespeare classic and then discuss.

WED: Period 3: Working with Jerks (Rogers & Stark)

Most of you are going to have to get a job in your life, and that means working with people. Annoying, annoying people. This workshop'll teach you some strategies other than "punching them in the head" to work with conflicting personality types.

Although sometimes punching them would be really, really nice.

THURSDAY

THURS: Period 1: Practical Philosophy (Wiggin)

At its heart, philosophy isn't about Plato, Nietzsche, or Hegel. It's about thinking about the greater frameworks of our worlds and our lives. Practical Philosophy strives to unite personal experiences with greater thought. Class participation not optional: discussion, challenge and argument are what make us think. And thinking's what we're about.

THURS: Period 2: Adventuring for Idiots, Because Clearly You Need It (Cara)

Given that this island is full of people who run at the things trying to kill us, this'll help keep you from tripping over your bootlaces and breaking your neck on the way.

THURS: Period 3: Life Soundtrack (Wilson)

Expanding your musical horizons and learning how to pick the perfect song for your scene. Moment. Whatever you wanna call it.

FRIDAY

FRI: Period 1: Super-Villainy and You! (Myers)

Whether you aspire to villainy or want to know how to stop those nefarious ne'er do wells, this class will give you all the information you need on what super-villainy is like and how it affects the common people. Taught by an actual "reformed" supervillain! Take those quotes out of there. He was a Thunderbolt! He saved the world from a terrible future using time travel!

FRI: Period 2: Fun With Magic (Hrothbert of Bainbridge)

Magic isn't always about saving the world and deadly serious things like that - it can also be fun! Come out for games, tricks, and assorted other things stuffy old magicians won't show you. (Magic not needed to take the class.)

FRI: Period 3: So You Just Met Your Relative From the Future (Kenobi & B. Skywalker)

This school has seen a whole host of classes covering the various strange things that can happen to you on the island. Worst among the lot, however, are those that mix with the personal: family. Whether it's about coping with a presumed-lost relative showing up on the island from a different timeline, the difficulties of navigating... certain daytime television weekends, or your dead beloved coming back to life, this class will try to teach you techniques to cope.

COMMUNITY CENTER CLASS

You don't have to sign up, but it helps to give the teacher an idea of how many folks might be coming! Community center classes are open to teachers, students, and townies.

WED: Yes, You Can Actually Cook (Spencer)

Food is life. For most carbon based lifeforms, a wide variety of foods are required to have enough energy to survive, much less get out and get active throughout the day. Hot Pockets, while nominally life sustaining, are not real food, and eating fortune cookies for dinner is not a habit you want to get into. You don't have to cook like a chef to get by in the kitchen. Join Eliot to learn the very basic techniques of cooking like an adult person so you don't die when the freezer or microwave break down.

NPC CLASSES
