FALL 2016 CLASS SIGN-UPS

Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone! It's time to sign up for your Fall 2016 Classes! These sign-ups are for both NEW and RETURNING students!

Please read the following before you start signing up:

1) Teacher and Student Class Expectations! The all important guideline for what is expected of the players in Fandom High. Please give it a once-over even if you've seen it in some form or other before - consider it a good thing to click and read while I put up the OCD!

2) Japanese characters, please sign up in the Western style - given name, then family name - to make our alphabetical OCDing easier.

3) PC classes are those taught by a teacher character, the things you're signing up for here, as opposed to the NPC classes, which are discussed in their own thread towards the end of this post.

The Important Stuff About Signing Up For Classes

1) Each student character MUST sign up for at least 2 PC classes. Each player may only sign up for a MAXIMUM of 8 PC classes, spread among your student characters in any way you choose, as long as each has the minimum of 2. (Yes, this means that if you only have one student, you could sign them up for 8 classes. Just think carefully about whether you have the availability to handle that.)

2) If you're a TA for a class, you need to sign up for that class. It will count towards your minimum 2 / maximum 8 courses. Please note TA-ship in the sign-up, so the character won't be counted towards the class-maximum of 20 students. Teachers: please refrain from having your own character act as the TA as it defeats the purpose of having a back-up player to post for you!

3) If it's OOC for your character to take a class but you really want to take it anyway, just sign them up and we'll pretend it was an IG paperwork mishap.

4) If you sign up, you need to show up. Class attendance is how we keep track of your character's activity. If you repeatedly fail to at least sign in to your classes, we'll have to contact you about it, and you could be asked to leave the game.

5) Class descriptions are subject to change at the teacher's discretion.

6) To be fair to people in all time-zones, sign-ups are not first-come, first-serve. Excess numbers in classes will be whittled down with the handy-dandy Random Number Generator (RNG).

And now we get to what you really want to see: The Fall Classes!!!!

FH class sign-ups will close at 11:59pm Eastern on Thursday, August 25th.

General FYI: Feel free to make changes to your class choices as long as you do it before the deadline. We use the final pings in each thread to make the class lists, not the email notifs. MONDAY

MON: Period 1: Pryde-Barton: Firsthand History

It's one thing to learn about past events in a classroom. It's another to see it for yourself. Fandom is lucky enough to have the technology to let you see and learn about big events through history by being there (or at a reasonable facsimile).

MON: Period 2: Rand: Game of Chance

Never mention the odds.

Sometimes, you find yourself in a tight spot, and you've got no idea how to get out of it. That's when you gamble. This class explores risk and reward in a large variety of settings, whether it be pulling crazy moves in impossible situations, or not getting your ass kicked at the pazaak table.

Uh, Republic Senate rules pazaak, of course. We don't condone actual gambling. Really.

MON: Period 3: Bond: Underrated Sports

If you've been paying attention to certain recent international sporting events, you may have learnt about a wide sampling from the world of athletic endeavours, but what about the sports that for whatever reason don't make the cut? The obscure, the esoteric, the made up by bored spies with terrible senses of humour, all kinds of underrated sports will be explored by this class.

TUESDAY

TUES: Period 1: Carlysle: Sex Ed

You think everything you need to know about sex is 'slap a condom on there, go to town'? Actually, wait, if you've had a standard public school sex ed class before you probably don't even know about the condom. It's okay. We can fix this. You don't have to end up pregnant and with an STD at sixteen, I promise! And you probably read [meta for Twilight] and got some weird ideas about love and commitment, too, didn't you? It happens. Learn all the stuff you don't know you need to know from a pro!

TUES: Period 2: Jarrus & Palmer: Culture Shock: Adjusting to Life on the Weird Side

So you're in a weird place. Want some observations about adjusting to life on a weird island, from two totally normal and not at all weird guys? Classes will focus on things about the island that might strike people, from newcomers to old hats, as odd, and will offer suggestions for adjusting to strange surroundings and circumstances on Fandom Island and beyond.

TUES: Period 3: Spencer: Shop

Shop. Like -- Shop? Really? Not "The Magic of Friendship Through Craft" or something? Well alright then.

Shop. Learn how to make things. Like, with power tools and stuff. Maybe fix a car. Make a door in someone's apartment using a chainsaw. Sure. Useful information for anyone's lifestyle.

WEDNESDAY

WED: Period 1: Starsmore: "Yes, And": Improv Theater and You

Improvisational Theatre has been a recorded staple of the performing arts going back at least as far as Africa in 391 BC. Italian performers improvised in the streets in the 16th to the 18th centuries, and it's been used as a tool in acting training since at least the 1890s. Improv teaches communication skills, teamwork, creative problem solving... and it's just plain fun.

WED: Period 2: Rogers & Stark: Debate

Watch your teachers get into verbal slap fights and think you're not noticing!

Civilized discussion and methods of handling sensitive matters without resorting to the time old method of calling someone a Nazi. (Unless they're really Hydra, because then they deserve it.) Learn how to stand up under a barrage of words or a Really Disappointed Look, stand your ground and defend your opinions while still maintaining professionalism and mutual respect for your opponent.

Even when they are so, so wrong.

WED: Period 3: Atreides: What NOT to do in a Fight

When it comes to Fandom, students often want to help. However, sometimes they do more harm than good. This class will help show the pros and cons of attempting to stab that horrific monster from beyond the veil.

THURSDAY

THUR: Period 1: Peanutbutter: Learnin' with Mr. Peanutbutter

THUR: Period 2: O'Conner: Criminal Justice & You

You may be considering pursuing a career in some form of criminal justice. Or you may...not. Either way, it can't hurt to get a basic grounding in how the system works and how it can affect you.

THUR: Period 3: Kenobi & Skywalker: Ethics

Before Fandom catapults you back into the real world, take a semester to think about the tough moral questions ("Should I dangle my roommate from the window for eating my potato chips?" "Should I lie about how that shirt makes my girlfriend look?" "Should I listen to my mentor when he's telling me things that are incredibly wrong?") before you face them out where the real consequences will be more catastrophic than just getting Master Kenobi's disappointed face.

FRIDAY

FRI: Period 1: Deadpool: Avoiding Dealing With Your Problems

Why deal with your issues in a healthy, constructive manner when you can repress things and pretend it's all okay? Don't answer that. Just take the class and learn valuable lessons about procrastination and sublimating your issues with violence. You know you wanna.

FRI: Period 2: Cara: Drivers' Ed

Kar go vroom, v. fast. Skeery red leather lady make students know kar go vroom right way, and not keep their ruum.

[OOC: Cara not having a driver's license has not stopped the squirrels helpfully signing her up to teach it, chances of this ending up being a class with very few cars being driven is high.]

COMMUNITY CENTER CLASSES

You don't have to sign up, but it helps to give the teacher an idea of how many folks might be coming! Community center classes are open to teachers, students, and townies.

Fri: Lecter: Flavors, Food Choices, and Menu Planning

An in-depth look into herbs and spices, cooking methods, food pairings, and menu planning. Depending on the speed at which students are able to cover the material, other topics may be broached as well.

NPC CLASSES

For those students in need of specific core content courses, NPC classes are handwavy, off-screen classes taken online at the student's own pace, and taught by our brilliant and not at all homicidal Danger Shop computer, HAL 9000. No sign-ups will be necessary, there is no minimum or maximum number of these classes your student can take, and they don't count towards or against the requirements for PC workshops.

We'll collect up your requests for class subjects, respond to anything that seems problematic, combine any duplicates, and make a list that will be posted along with the PC workshop rosters once sign-ups are over. After that, any student may refer to that list when talking about additional classes they're taking!

So, in this thread, please request NPC classes of a normal high school nature that you'd like to be available for your characters to take. (List as many as you'd like in the same comment, but please keep them to classes you actually want, not general suggestions.)
