Class Sign Ups - Fall 2017

Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone! It's time to sign up for your Fall 2017 Classes! These sign-ups are for both NEW and RETURNING students!

Please read the following before you start signing up:

1) Teacher and Student Class Expectations! The all important guideline for what is expected of the players in Fandom High. Please give it a once-over even if you've seen it in some form or other before - consider it a good thing to click and read while I put up the OCD!

2) Japanese characters, please sign up in the Western style - given name, then family name - to make our alphabetical OCDing easier.

3) PC classes are those taught by a teacher character, the things you're signing up for here, as opposed to the NPC classes, which are discussed in their own thread towards the end of this post.

The Important Stuff About Signing Up For Classes

1) Each student character MUST sign up for at least 2 PC classes. Each player may only sign up for a MAXIMUM of 8 PC classes, spread among your student characters in any way you choose, as long as each has the minimum of 2. (Yes, this means that if you only have one student, you could sign them up for 8 classes. Just think carefully about whether you have the availability to handle that.)

2) If you're a TA for a class, you need to sign up for that class. It will count towards your minimum 2 / maximum 8 courses. Please note TA-ship in the sign-up, so the character won't be counted towards the class-maximum of 20 students. Teachers: please refrain from having your own character act as the TA as it defeats the purpose of having a back-up player to post for you!

3) If it's OOC for your character to take a class but you really want to take it anyway, just sign them up and we'll pretend it was an IG paperwork mishap.

4) If you sign up, you need to show up. Class attendance is how we keep track of your character's activity. If you repeatedly fail to at least sign in to your classes, we'll have to contact you about it, and you could be asked to leave the game.

5) Class descriptions are subject to change at the teacher's discretion.

6) To be fair to people in all time-zones, sign-ups are not first-come, first-serve. Excess numbers in classes will be whittled down with the handy-dandy Random Number Generator (RNG).

FH class sign-ups will close at 11:59pm Eastern on Thursday, August 24th.

General FYI: Feel free to make changes to your class choices as long as you do it before the deadline. We use the final pings in each thread to make the class lists, not the email notifs. MONDAY

MON: Period 1: Atreides: Diplomacy, Relationships, & Tactics: The Art of War

Using the classic text "The Art of War", we will focus on the different P'ien, and examine how they can relate to personal, professional, and tactical situations. No matter if the enemy is a business rival, a romantic conquest, or an invading army, the principles behind the analytical thinking of Sun Tsu remain the same, and can be applied to almost any situation.

How do you learn to stand up for what you believe in? Practice. Ethics class will help you confront tough situations and learn to articulate how you feel before you're facing them in the real world.

MON: Period 3: Morgendorffer: Creative Writing

This is a class where you would be prompted every week to write creatively and turn those writings in for a grade.

TUESDAY

TUE: Period 1: Deadpool: Cryptids and You!

What does the class name say? Did you read it? If you did, you know what this class is about. If you don't know, maybe you need this class in your life.

TUE: Period 2: Aphra: Artifact Restoration

So the thing that doesn't get mentioned about archaeology is that unless you're really lucky most everything you find is going to be some kind of broken, and once you get past a certain point you're going to need more than glue and spacetape to fix it. Luckily I'm great at fixing things and can teach you all kinds of tricks for making ancient technology functional again. Or for when your speeder beaks down.

TUE: Period 3: Pryde: Computer Science

This class will challenge the more confident computer user/programmer with a variety of projects and scenarios. It might confuse the less confident computer user, but hey, you might learn something!

Disclaimer: There will be a focus on ethics, so don't use anything you learn here to hack anything important unless it might actually save the world.

WEDNESDAY

WED: Jenkins: Introduction to Earth Zoology

The Earth is full of strange, beautiful, hilarious, adorable, and fantastic animals. So full, in fact, that there is literally no way to ever learn all about all of them, even if you've lived for thousands of years. But that's no reason not to get started anyway.

From axolotls to zebra fish. Aardvarks to zooplankton. Abominable snowmen to zombies. Well. Perhaps not zombies. Each week we'll learn about a new fascinating creature that exists somewhere on some version of the Earth, and perhaps even meet one in person.

WED: Carlysle: Taking Time for You

It doesn't matter what sort of craziness is going on around you, you need to take time for you and stop checking Twitter oh god before you combust in a ball of stress-induced high blood pressure. This class will teach you some self-care and calming techniques. You might even get to nap for credit.

THURSDAY

THUR: Period 1: Lecter: First Aid for Fandom

Basic first aid is a useful skill to have anywhere; in Fandom, it is practically a necessity, and certain sorts of events may require more than the usual skills. This class will aim to cover both the basics of human first aid, and some of the less usual things that you might encounter, as well as the ways in which these things might (and might not) be generalized to assist other lifeforms.

THUR: Period 2: Cara & Burnsides: The Island Hates You (Yes, You)

It does, just accept it, no place that didn't hate you personally would be so weird. But that doesn't mean you can't give it some of your own back. With your fists!

THUR: Period 3: Rand: How To Get By In A Hostile World (AKA Weaseling 101)

Let's be honest here: not everyone's a superhero. Or at least not the kind of superhero that doesn't die. A lot of us are just normal people trying to stay alive long enough to have a good time. Unfortunately, there's always the bigger-than-thou people of this multiverse fighting out their battles over our backs, and that's where this class comes in. How do you deal with that? What tips and tricks are there to get out of harm's way when harm's way has laser vision and can read your mind? And if you get stuck in the middle of a hostile situation, be it a sleazy town with no money in your pocket or a battlefield, how do you get out of it using what little you've got?

FRIDAY

FRI: Period 1: Winchester: Sex Ed

While the internet is ripe with information on all things sex, it's also filled with incorrect, inappropriate, or downright insulting information that no teenager really needs. This class will cover safety, health issues, and anything else the students feel needs to be discussed.

FRI: Period 2: Rogers & Stark: Civics

One of the most important jobs for any soon-to-be adult is to be informed about how your government works. Steve Rogers and Tony Stark--with minimal ranting--will explain the American system of government: how it's supposed to work, how it currently works, and what you can do to fix it.

NPC CLASSES

Nerds.

For those students in need of specific core content courses, NPC classes are handwavy, off-screen classes taken online at the student's own pace, and taught by our brilliant and not at all homicidal Danger Shop computer, HAL 9000. No sign-ups will be necessary, there is no minimum or maximum number of these classes your student can take, and they don't count towards or against the requirements for PC workshops.

We'll collect up your requests for class subjects, respond to anything that seems problematic, combine any duplicates, and make a list that will be posted along with the PC workshop rosters once sign-ups are over. After that, any student may refer to that list when talking about additional classes they're taking!

So, in this thread, please request NPC classes of a normal high school nature that you'd like to be available for your characters to take. (List as many as you'd like in the same comment, but please keep them to classes you actually want, not general suggestions.)
