SUMMER (FIRST SESSION) 2019 WORKSHOP SIGN-UPS

Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone! It's time to sign up for your First Session Summer 2018 Workshops! These sign-ups are for both NEW and RETURNING students (but not graduating seniors, unless they're TAs.)!

Please read the following before you start signing up:

1) Teacher and Student Class Expectations! The all important guideline for what is expected of the players in Fandom High. Please give it a once-over even if you've seen it in some form or other before - consider it a good thing to click and read while I put up the OCD!

2) Japanese characters, please sign up in the Western style - given name, then family name - to make our alphabetical OCDing easier.

3) PC classes are those taught by a teacher character, the things you're signing up for here, as opposed to the NPC classes, which are discussed in their own thread towards the end of this post.

The Important Stuff About Signing Up For Classes

1) Since we've removed the cap on characters, we have also removed the cap on the number of classes your characters can sign up for, but please consider your RL ability to keep up before chucking a character at every class we're offering.

2) If you're a TA for a class, you need to sign up for that class. It will count towards your minimum 2. (Not you, recent grads.) Please note TA-ship in the sign-up for easy of making the class lists accurate. Teachers: please refrain from having your own character act as the TA as it defeats the purpose of having a back-up player to post for you!

3) If it's OOC for your character to take a class but you really want to take it anyway, just sign them up and we'll pretend it was an IG paperwork mishap.

4) If you sign up, you need to show up. Class attendance is how we keep track of your character's activity. If you repeatedly fail to at least sign in to your classes, we'll have to contact you about it, and you could be asked to leave the game.

5) Class descriptions are subject to change at the teacher's discretion.

6) To be fair to people in all time-zones, sign-ups are not first-come, first-serve.

And now we get to what you really want to see: Summer Workshops! (Session 1)!!!!

FH class sign-ups will close at 11:59pm Eastern on Friday, May 3rd 2018, and are IG knowledge at the Welcome Picnic.

General FYI: Feel free to make changes to your class choices as long as you do it before the deadline. We use the final pings in each thread to make the class lists, not the email notifs. MONDAY

MON: Period 1: Skywalker & Sun: Cutthroat Games

Games! You can't have them without competition. Fierce, fierce competition! In this class you will play a variety of games against your classmates for bragging rights, and possibly to learn sportsmanship. Games include board and sports, along with anything else we can come up with.

Note: no actual throats should be cut in this class. Because insurance and school boards.

MON: Period 2: Jarrus: Tao of a Silly Old Bear

This class is apparently what happens when you go to the office to hand in a temporary resignation from teaching, a Moose takes exception to that fact, and shoves a book into your hand featuring philosophy and wisdom from a Western Taoist... who happens to be a stuffed bear. This class will teach such things as the correlation between Inner Nature and Cottleston Pie, how Tiddly Pom and the Snowball Effect are the same thing, and how to properly spell 'Tuesday.' (It's spelled with a two.) With any luck, you'll leave this workshop with a greater appreciation for the simpler things in life. And possibly some idea about how to deal with unruly Heffalumps.

MON: Period 3: Zero: Working Together: How Not to be an A-Hole

People suck. We all know that. You can lone wolf things right up to the point that you can't and then you get eaten by a grue or something worse. This class will be a series of scenarios where you must work with your classmates to form a team or teams to accomplish a stated goal. Sometimes the goal is: Survive. These classes will be held in the Danger Room Shop.

MON: Period 4: Lecter: Philosophy of Food

There's more to food than just eating it. There are growing it, hunting it, preparing it, and rituals around it. Food has a place in culture. This class will explore that. And yes, there will be plenty to eat.

TUESDAY

TUES: Period 1: Smith: The Mid-Century Cookbook

Post-war America in the mid-twentieth century was a time full of new innovations and an enthusiasm for utilizing technology in exciting ways. This naturally passed over into food, where the novelty of preservatives and stuff in a can was still shiny and impressive and clearly meant such things needed to be worked into every meal in a variety of interesting and creative ways.

And gelatin.

So, so much gelatin.

This workshop will take students on a journey through the mid-century cookbook, giving them the opportunity to recreate and try a variety of baffling and daring food creations that they're sure to never forget. Revel in the sheer genius of it all and marvel at the fact that people actually used to eat this crap.

TUES: Period 2: Stark & Rogers: Wilderness Adventures

Have you ever wanted to know how to find your way through the woods without a compass? Tell poison ivy from...not poison ivy? Eat beans over a campfire and tell dirty jokes Participate in wholesome outdoor activities? Steve and Tony are...probably not the people who should be teaching you this, but here we are!

With Steve's WWII knowledge and Tony's devotion to GPS, you won't even die! Hooray!

TUES: Period 3: Aphra: Your Plan is Now on Fire

Everyone knows no plan survives contact with the enemy, (and if you don't, you should) but they also don't survive, your allies, your friends, family, that one rando you pass on the streets...things go wrong very quickly is what I'm saying. That's when you need to now how to improvise. Which I am great at, for the record.

TUES: Period 4: O'Hara: Fun with Science

Science is fun, and anyone who tells you otherwise is boring. So let's have fun with it!

THUR: Period 1: Blackstone: Blacksmithing Basics

Weapons!

If that got your attention, odds are, you know 'em, you use 'em, and you love 'em. But do you know much about the art of actual making some of them? Blacksmithing is a time-honored trade that takes a whole lot more than a seven-week summer workshop to master, but, hey, it's not a bad place to start! We'll have a chance to learn all about forging steel, shaping it, various different techniques and blades, proper care and maintenence, and the opportunity to walk out with a weapon crafted by your very own hands at the end of it. And, even if you don't get that far, you'll still get to work with fire and hit things, so it's still a win!

THUR: Period 2: Wiggin: Practical Philosophy

At its heart, philosophy isn't about Plato, Nietzsche, or Hegel. It's about thinking about the greater frameworks of our worlds and our lives. Practical Philosophy strives to unite personal experiences with greater thought. Class participation not optional: discussion, challenge and argument are what make us think. And thinking's what we're about.

THUR: Period 3: Burnside & Cara: Sparkly Destruction - Arts & Crafts That You Can Use

Ideally you'll always have access to high quality weapons. Sometimes when you need to improvise. A lot. Learn how to take seemingly innocuous items and craft weapons of glittery mayhem.

FRIDAY

FRI: Period 1: Diaz: Fandom Gladiators

Remember American Gladiators? That show in the '80s and '90s where people with too much hair and too little spandex ran around pretending to fight each other and running obstacle courses? They stood on platforms and hit each other with giant Q-Tips, there were giant balls everywhere, and tons of padded weapons?

Probably not, because even if you are from this world, you're probably too young to remember it. Or too old. Something like that. Either way, this is a dumb class based on a dumb show, where I put you through dumb challenges that usually involve beating each other up or doing dumb physical stunts.

And, hey, look at that, they actually let me write my dumb description this time. What a bunch of dummies.

FRI: Period 2: Constantine: Working the Con

The Game. A con, a scam, a grift, a hustle, a bunko, a swindle, a flimflam, a gaffle or a bamboozle. When life gives you suckers, of course you make lemonade.

A confidence artist - or con artist - is someone who exploits characteristics of the human psyche such as dishonesty, honesty, vanity, compassion, credulity, irresponsibility, naïveté, or greed.

In other words, 90% of humanity is a con artist. But not necessarily good ones.

Whether you're looking to play the game or want to learn how not to end up as the mark, this class will look at famous con men (and women) and their games, to see how and why they work.

NOTE: Due to the lack of verbal filter, any class with John Constantine should be considered PG-13 on a regular basis, due to swearing. You are warned.

FRI: Period 3: Carlysle & Wilson: Recreational Misuse and Alternative Uses of Gadgets

How to do simple things, but more complicated and pointless! It's like life hacks, but they don't work and you'll probably break everything involved!

COMMUNITY CENTER CLASS

This class is offered for all characters--townies, teachers, and students--to take. Because it's more casual, it's not essential to sign up for it here to attend, but it's nice to give the players an idea of participation levels.

THURS: Octavian: Modern Earth Entertainment

Another evening a week when we'll be watching movies from Earth, plus maybe branching out into television or other such things.

NPC Classes

Nerds.

For those students in need of specific core content courses, NPC classes are handwavy, off-screen classes taken online at the student's own pace, and taught by our brilliant and not at all homicidal Danger Shop computer, HAL 9000. No sign-ups will be necessary, there is no minimum or maximum number of these classes your student can take, and they don't count towards or against the requirements for PC workshops.

We'll collect up your requests for class subjects, respond to anything that seems problematic, combine any duplicates, and make a list that will be posted along with the PC workshop rosters once sign-ups are over. After that, any student may refer to that list when talking about additional classes they're taking!

So, in this thread, please request NPC classes of a normal high school nature that you'd like to be available for your characters to take. (List as many as you'd like in the same comment, but please keep them to classes you actually want, not general suggestions.)
