Summer Travels Week 6: Arkham!
Wow, hmm, you know what? Maybe it's time for the island to go home. That sounds good right? Going home? Because whenever it tries to go anywhere, it ends up somewhere terrible. (I bet y'all miss the dinosaurs now, huh? Huh?) So on Monday, Fandom is gonna leave the ocean under Reykjavik and try to head home. Unfortunately, it's gonna be just a liiiiiittle sidetracked and end up in Massachusetts. That's not so bad, right? That's where I am! *waves to the island* Oh. Unfortunately it's also where Arkham is. Which means it's time to once more visit the BDE given to us by...LOVECRAFT.
Okay, so we don't have to worry about Old Ones rising from the deep or Hastur and the King In Yellow. Unfortunately, our problems are a little closer to home. Because, you see, this week the people we have to worry about hurting...are one another. *inspirational movie music cue*
Unlike last time this BDE went around, we don't have a single meteor to contend with. That'd be far too easy. In this version of the world, the meteor's affect has already seeped into the groundwater. While the water in the ocean is too diluted to take effect (though strange things are indeed happening, far below the waves) and the water in our pipes is treated to be pure, any place with standing water is going to be affected by the meteor's powers. That means the duck pond in the park, the onsen, Selkie Lake, and the school pond are all possible infection points.
So, let's look at the basic timeline for how the infection will affect the island:
Sunday night into Monday: The island arrives just off the coast of Massachusetts. The infected groundwater seeps up into our bodies of water. Just before dawn, the infected pools begin to glow faintly, too dim to see after the sun rises.
Monday: Everything is fine and normal, other than location. People go about their business, animals drink from the infected water. If you want to get infected with enough time to completely turn, you're going to want to do so in the first four days. Today, there's nothing weird to tip anyone off (unless, say, you're prone to dreams, visions, or Bad Feelings), so a trip to the onsen or a picnic by the lake or even just falling into the duck pond is a great way to get infected without holding onto the idiot ball. After sunset, the glow from the water becomes obvious. Maybe that's just this island's Weird Thing? Kinda pretty though, right?
Tuesday: The effects are slowly starting to seep out into the immediate surrounding areas of the waterways. Most plants and materials closest to water start to have the life and color leeched from them. Touching these things will cause them to collapse as though they were made of ash. Certain plants (generally weeds or vines or anything that stings/has thorns) start to change. They get longer. Sharper. It's easy to get tangled up in them, often to the point of falling into the water. Any feeling of getting tripped or dragged a few inches is clearly your imagination.
Wednesday: Animals who have continued to drink from the water sources also start to faintly glow. They also become very aggressive, including the normally-docile teal deer. It's entirely possible you could get into a knock-down, drag-out fight with a rabbit. Or a chipmunk. Or a squirrel. The dead and dying patches are spreading in concentric circles out from the water sources and the glow from the water is bright enough to be seen by daylight.
Thursday: Infected animals are pretty much maddened at this point. The wild places on the island (anywhere there is sufficient greenery on the map, including the park) are now incredibly dangerous. The teal deer look like this and are about two feet high at the shoulder, about three and a half feet high at the head. Alots look like this, are about 6 and a half feet tall overall, and weigh roughly two tons. You might also run into infected birds, (especially the ducks and flamingos, eesh), frogs, midsize mammals (think cats, raccoons, skunks, opposums, etc), and small mammals (mice, rats, chipmunks, voles, etc). These creatures all have human faces, so enjoy those nightmares. The surviving plants are now openly aggressive. Thorns are now roughly the length of fingers and are razor sharp and they don't make any pretense about trying to drag you somewhere. - no longer into the water. No, these plants want to bring you to their roots, most of which have mouths on them.
Oh, and by Thursday, anybody infected on Monday is also a monster. Best of luck!
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday: The blight continues until the whole island is basically dead. Most of the trees are dead, the ones that aren't look like this. Town and the dorms/school are the only safe places and even then things try to get in. Researchers, scientists, and mages might be able to find things to keep people safe (wards, spells, shields, weapons). They're also welcome to find the original ritual to try to counteract the effects, but it's too little to late for this AU, folks.
Sunday Night/Monday Morning The island will be settling back to another "break" AU next week. When that post goes up, everything infected by the Lovecraftian powers will go back to normal, pretty much dropping where they're standing and turning to normal. Whatever their version of normal is. Feel free to ping into the post for transformations back as well. People who collapse can either eventually get back up and head home, or stay there and wait for someone to find/rescue them. Whatever makes you happy!
Much like the best of infections, this spreads by fluid swapping/ingestion. If you drink the glowing water, or immerse part of your body into it, letting it into your pores, you're going to get infected. If you get bitten by an infected animal or drooled on by it, or if it gets blood on you, you're going to get infected. If you swap bodily fluids with an infected person on day two of the infection or later, you're going to get infected.
Traditional methods of healing do nothing, and magical/supernatural healing only delays the spread of the infestation: it's rewriting the cells of your body one by one, so the healers also have to be fighting it back cell by cell. Those with a natural healing factor will find themselves taxed to the limit to fight off the infestation, only delaying it by a day or so. (this section c/p'd directly from
nookiepowered, thank you!) Hands-on attempts to heal people, animals, plants, or the island as a whole, either won’t work at all, or will be of limited effectiveness. (Living things may look healed, but symptoms will begin coming back within the same day; inanimate things such as damaged stone or buildings can’t be fixed at all.) (this section c/p'd directly from
captainskullpoopl, thank you!)
Furthermore, not only is your character undergoing a physical transformation, they're undergoing a mental one as well. Like the flora and fauna of the island, victims will also start to become more violent and and aggressive. This can happen at any speed, depending on how strong- or weak-willed you believe your character to be, and can happen irrespective of where in the 'physical changes' your character is. It should, however, take at least a few hours, and no longer than three to four days.
If your character has powers, they will retain those powers. However, their mindset and control will probably be shot. So that's fun.
Here's the timeline for how the infection will affect people!
Day 0 of Infection: You got infected today! You feel a little under the weather, maybe. A bit more snappish and frustrated than usual. Tiny gray dots appear on your skin that feel dry, maybe a little scaly.
Day 1 You got infected yesterday! You're definitely running a fever and your bad mood has progressed up to ill-temper. Those tiny gray dots have turned into gray patches of skin, itchy and pretty blotchy. They start small, but by the end of the day, they're really large and very noticeable. You have a headache that just won't quit.
Day 2 You were infected two days ago! But hey! Good news! The fever broke! ...Mostly because your immune system has given up entirely, but at least it's a positive? Bad news: you're pretty obviously a monster now. Your nails have turned to claws, your brow has distended, your skin is uniformly gray at this point, and your eyes are entirely black. You're still you, though! Kinda? Okay, you're you on steroids: very easily angered, aggressive, and pretty violent. Some semblance of self-control remains, though!
Day 3 You were infected three days ago. Umm. You're entirely a monster now. Your chest has expanded, maybe you have horns or wings. You definitely have a tail. And fangs. And you're only barely a person any more. If you haven't already run off into the 'woods' by this point, that's where you head to, now. Don't worry. You'll be back. You've got others to infect. Or maybe just to try to eat.
If you're infected later in the week, feel free to speed up the symptoms. After all, the power is stronger on Thursday than it was on Monday, so maybe the transformation only takes about a day or so, rather than the full three. (You can also have it go at the normal rate if you just want to play with the trauma of slowly turning into a monster, but not the full-blown infection.)
Generally, though, the timeline will go: infected Monday is fully transformed by Thursday. Tuesday transforms on Friday, Wednesday on Saturday, Thursday on Sunday.
Dates: June 17 - 23rd
Causeway: OFF (People who are not infected can still take portals, but Fandom is not letting this infection spread to the mainland. You know. More than it already has.)
Available AUs None! Well, turning into a monster is sort of an AU. So monsters?

I'll still be in the woods this weekend, but this woods, I have SERVICE, WOO!

OOC
IT WAS FULL OF DESPAIR.
Re: I Have A Question!
I ask because this: "unless, say, you're prone to dreams, visions, or Bad Feelings" reminded me that Mae canonically dreams about old gods. And said dreams already canonically make her feel sick.
So, basically, can she have weird, confusing, stressful dreams about shadowy tentacle monsters that she doesn't understand but which give her migraines? (I mean, she probably can regardless, but I mean like specifically related to this BDE throwback. . . .)
Re: I Have A Question!
As well, greenery in the wild going mad... how does that impact things like Iris' personal greenhouse and the garden on the dorm roof? Places which are technically not wild, but are full of greenery?

In fact, on Sunday, there might be a similar glow coming from faaaaaaaaaaaaaaar below the ocean depths.
DREAM MAE DREAM!
Re: Brainstorm Ideas
I'm maybe drafting an onsen party post, as we speak. Psh, focus on work? On a Friday?
Re: I Have A Question!
The garden on the roof is also safe (for the same reasons), Iris's greenhouse would be safe normally, but if you want to have ~*reasons*~ why it gets infected, FOLLOW YOUR BLISS. The plants only die/turn evil when they come in contact with infected water.

Re: OOC
CAUSE I FEEL LIKE YOU MIGHT WANT THEM TO BE AWESOME.
Re: OOC
(I should move this to the questions thread, but for reals, the last time we had this BDE, people got to keep scars from their transformations, will that be the case here?)

Thank you, bb! <3 <3 <3

That being said, if this affected their bodies so much that a scar happens anyway? WELL WHO AM I TO SAY THAT IS WRONG?
