Summer Travels Week 9: Silent Hill

Well, in case you were wondering "what could be worse than Muppet kidnappings?" I'm here with the answer for you! Because in the next episode of 'where in the multiverse is Fandom High Island' we end up revisiting this BDE...Silent Hill, West Virgina.

Now, lucky for us, the island isn't becoming Silent Hill. That would just be awful. Instead, the island is going to materialize in Toluca Lake, the Causeway stretching out to the abandoned town of Silent Hill. (The town of Shepherd's Glen, is accessible by boat if you should want to?) The island is staying separate from the towns for a very important reason:

Content Warning: this is a seriously effed-up and probably triggery canon, whose sordid history includes torture and child abuse, and whose monsters all escaped from the Uncanny Valley Zoo, most of them leaving their skins or other body parts behind. In short, it's creepy, disturbing, and gross.

Which is why all of this is going outside of the cut. Days in Silent Hill are pretty normal. Sure, the town the Causeway leads to is still undergoing a 30+ year underground coal fire, and smoke lies heavy over the sky, and ash floats down pretty regularly, but apart from the general creepiness that comes with visiting abandoned towns, they are otherwise fine. Folks with psychic powers/Jedi senses/prone to bad feelings may feel uncomfortable there during daylight hours, but there will be nothing there to back those feelings up - you know, other than the abandonment, decay, and fire damage.

Nothing triggery will happen during daylight hours. Therefore, people who don't want to deal with that stuff can go about in the daytime posts. School held during normal hours is unaffected, jobs during daylight hours are fine. You will not need to worry about running into anything disturbing so long as you interact with posts labeled Daytime. (And all posts should get a "Daytime" or "After Dark" tag in the subject so people can see at a glance if a post is safe.)

If necessary, any post that is specifically labeled "After Dark" should also contain a content warning that is not hidden behind a cut, just to keep people informed. "After Dark" posts can be trigger-free, especially if it's say, people who are sheltering in place and just want to talk.

Once again, "Daytime" posts are trigger-free, "After Dark" may be and will be warned for otherwise. Here is a link back to the "should be warned for" guidelines. Please be respectful of your fellow players.

Again, during the day, people live in relative normalcy, despite the creepy neighbors on the shore of the lake. Both times are available to explore on your own, day or night. When explored in the daytime, both seem to have once been normal towns, though Shepherd's Glen shows signs of having gone through some rough times, recently:

The streets are beyond neglected, many having fallen victim to massive sink holes, while the structures have fared no better. Most buildings cannot be entered, their doors having broken or rusted shut beyond repair. Those buildings that can still be entered are in a state of disrepair all their own. Many internal doors have seized, paint flakes and peels away, floors and ceilings have collapsed. Even the flags and the banners for Shepherd's Glen 150th Anniversary Celebration which were set up in 2003 can still be seen hanging over the streets of the town, completely forgotten and decaying, a sign that the town has seen better days.

Silent Hill's dereliction is older and more thorough:

The town was destroyed in a sudden fire that burned into the coal mines beneath the town, leading to its eventual evacuation and abandonment. How much of the town's buildings were set on fire is unknown, but it is extremely unlikely that the entire town was set on the fire. The people tried to evacuate as quick as they could but it was hellish. People were dying and disappearing. Half of the bodies could not be found. Toxic fumes (easily spotted by places with greenish tinges to the air and a foul smell) still rise up in moddable locations.

Sunset is heralded by the sound of a truly unsettling airhorn. Ash starts to fall like thick snow and it becomes dark very quickly. This is a sign to get somewhere and settle in for the night, because Silent Hill and Shepherd's Glen have become twisted nightmare versions of themselves and some of that leaks across the Causeway to Fandom, too.

Phones won't work after dark - though they'll start to emit loud bursts of static whenever monsters are near. Walls start to rust and bleed, the roads become torn and broken, sinkholes open up, and floors rot. Basically, Fandom starts looking like the other two towns do, with a thick cover of ash that muffles noise and provides plenty of cover to hide. Which is useful for if you're trying to hide...and also useful if you're trying to hunt.

In the day, it's all ashes and smoke and exploring the ruins, when night falls, it's fighting and horrors and hunkering in place, hopefully with as many people as you can. (Dorms, clinic remain "always safe places," Caritas may continue to function that way if [personal profile] throughaphase wants it to continue to do so. You can absolutely "shelter in place" in other locations, but those places can also have violence break out in them if all players sheltering there agree.)

What sorts of monsters will you see? Decaying demon dogs, shadowy ghost-children, shrieking child-shapes made out of fire and coal, blind zombie nurses, giant swarming cockroaches, armless figures that spit acid at them, a butcher with an apron of human skin and a very big knife...The main monsters are here, but others may certainly be modded if you'd like. The little girl and the cultists from the first BDE are not present in this iteration, you will only face twisted monsters.

Come daybreak, the monsters will once again cross over the Causeway back to the towns they came from, the ash will lessen, and the buildings will go back to normal. Phones will work again. The world will once again look like it should.

Until the airhorn sounds again.

Dates: July 8th - July 14th
Causeway: On! For all your Silent Hill exploration needs.
AUs: None. Yes, technically the Silent Hill monsters fit the general idea of what can be AU'd, but they're all pretty sexualized and/or come from sexual trauma, so I'm going to arbitrarily say no one can turn into one of those.

As an FYI, I figure Caritas' sanctuary spell will hold through all the AUs (unless for some reason I change my mind and really really want it to fail at some point).
