Meme: More than Meets the Eye
No, this is not about the Autobots waging battles to destroy the Decepticons.
It’s break week and it looks like we haven’t done this since February 2023
There are certain characteristics about the people we play that *we* know, but we get tired of repeating in every introductory ping. There's also stuff that players wouldn't really be able to figure out just looking at an icon--how tall someone is, if they have an accent, what kind of clothes they are wearing...and in some cases, if their eyes/hair/whatever are different than the PB we've picked.
So wax poetic about what your characters look/sound like, if they have tics or scars, how they dress, if they have a distinct singing voice, etc!
Just a good reference to have in case you're in a casual thread and are like "Hmm what does Anakin wear under those robes? Or does Dean even wear flannel in this heat and humidity? What does Sam the Eagle smell like?”

- Always a bit of stubble on his face unless he has to pass himself off as a FBI agent in the field.
- He keeps his hair fairly close cropped as he doesn't want anything he gets into a fight with to have anything they could grab on to. (Something Sam has never learned)
- Basically he looks like this these days
- Despite the heat this summer, he's never in shorts. Almost always in jeans and a plain dark t-shirt
- Yes, when the weather permits it he's always in flannel. Occasionally he'll switch it up with a denim shirt
- If he is in jeans (99% of the time) he's wearing boots.
- When it gets colder he'll put on a military field jacket or a Dickies type coat. Strictly utilitarian
- When on the job he'll wear a cheap suit.
- He's picked up a few nice suits to wear to the "fancy" parties around here. Mostly so he can show Margo he can clean up if he really wanted too.

* Her perfume smells like mulberry and cedar.
* She is generally wearing "gloves" that extend from halfway up her forearm down to the middle of her palm, with a hole for her thumb, leaving her fingers and the upper half of her palms bare. Very practical for gloves, yes. They're leather in winter and mesh/fishnet during the rest of the year.
* She always, always, always has the Chain Veil attached to her clothing somewhere and resting against her right hip.
* Her body temperature is noticeably low. It's more than just touching someone with cold hands, it's systemic and significant enough that you can't see her breath even on the coldest days. It means she's pretty comfortable even when it's sweltering, but also miserable in the winter. (Mood, Lili.) But she does act like a heat sink, so if she hugged you in the summer, you'd cool off. However, she's not a hugger, so oh well.
* If you get very close to her, you might be able to notice faint lines over her skin in seemingly abstract patterns, and touching them there is the slightest different texture from the rest of her skin. That's the demonic contract etched into her skin, you know. Normal stuff.
* She looks like she's in her early thirties, except when you look into her eyes sometimes and the full weight of her age becomes obvious.
* Her voice is naturally low and a little husky.
* While usually she favors lounging and sitting bisexually in chairs, if she's not paying attention, her natural posture slips towards sitting up straight, shoulders back, head high...like, say, she'd been the recipient of a lot of etiquette and deportment lessons.
*Obviously, she's almost always in purple and whether it's her usual gown or something more Earth-standard, it's going show off her figure: plunging necklines, high slits, tight, any combination of the three...
* Does not usually carry a purse or a bag, because the rest of the Multiverse believes in pockets and everyone who wears femme clothing on this plane should rise up and overthrow Big Fashion.

* Her skin is called "sienna-brown" in the books, and she is very obviously mixed-race. Mixed-race what is a little more complicated, especially since her mother was a djinn and they're shapeshifters, buuuuut...anyway, she looks mixed.
* She has amber-colored eyes.
* Oh, except for when she's using her magic, in which case they're gold and kinda glow.
* She naturally smells like petrichor, though when she's using magic she also smells of ozone, like an incoming thunder storm. She also smells like cocoa butter, but that's not a sylph thing, she just uses cocoa butter.
* She has this tattoo on the back of her left shoulder.
* Unlike Liliana, she's never particularly warm or cold, except in extreme temperatures. She has her own personal HVAC, which is also why it takes a day or so for pollen to affect her.
* There is a light trace her North Carolina drawl when she talks, but it becomes more pronounced when she's sleepy or very emotional. Or bitten by gremlins.
* When singing in her own voice I imagine her sounding a lot like Asia Monet Ray, though she's an excellent mimic and can sound like pretty much anyone.
* Has her ears pierced and may eventually get her septum pierced to match her PB
* Is always wearing a black onyx pendant under her shirt. She fiddles with it when she's anxious. There's also a second necklace that she's usually wearing, which just has a flat piece of hematite on it.
* In the summers, she's almost always in a tank top and short denim cut-offs. Not quite daisy dukes, but close.
* Has three faint scars, like thin white lines on the inside of her right elbow, all in a line and perfectly uniform.
* Tends not to wear shoes in the house because she's not a barbarian.

- She's around 5'5" and starting to get more of an athletic build thanks to the patented Carol Danvers work out routine
- Her clothes are more about comfort than fashion. While she's not afraid of color it's mostly a colorful top and usually geeky and superhero related.
- She always wears her grandmother's "bangle" on her left wrist. The other quantum band is being held by SHIELD because Fury and Carol do not think a teenager should have the ability to create portals into the universe. (Lame)
- She wears the costume that her mom made her around Fandom as she likes to use her Aladna outfit for special occasions. Shut up. It makes sense.
- Kamala probably changes her nail color almost every week and also loves to do a different color on each finger. If she goes back home and is planning on wearing her costume she takes it all off.
- She's almost always smiling with an open and inviting demeanor. Whenever she talks to someone she is always leaning in.
- Talks with her hands and is always gesturing like crazy. When she's quiet or thinking her hands will be fidgeting
- Her enthusiasm is almost palpable. She’s almost always in motion, bouncing slightly on her toes or shifting her weight from one foot to the other.

* Is 28.
* Clocks in at 6'3 in his socks, but is usually wearing boots which adds probably like another inch or so.
* Is always, always, always in black. Does it look like he's wearing another color in an icon? Sorry, must be something weird about your color settings, he's definitely in black. From his introduction in the book
He also often wears a wide-brimmed pointed witch's hat. Yes, even though he's supposed to be incognito.
* Is also prone to working on his property shirtless. In his defense, though, he's usually doing a lot of manual labor, which is reflected in his build - lithe-but-muscular.
* According to the book, he has "strong, dark brows, cut jaw, and quick, bright eyes that couldn't seem to decide if they were blue or gray." There's also an aura of sensuality about him, as is common with witches of the flesh.
* Has an earring in one ear and is one of those people with resting friendly face. He's also an odd mix of paranoia and wide-eyed wonderment.
* His hands are callused and have those tiny scars that suggests he works with his hands a lot.
* Smells like fresh air, fresh herbs, and rich earth. Not magically or anything, he's just usually outside working with the land or puttering in his house making various concoctions.
* For all that he's from Massachusetts, he does not have the accent.
* Generally sports a a bit of facial hair, but sometimes tries for clean-shaven. Which then transforms back to facial hair when he forgets to shave because he's busy doing other things.

Octavia Blake
-- Tan and healthy-looking; still mostly muscle as she has been since her teens, but has some curves on her.
-- Green eyes, dark brown hair past her shoulders, worn down messily unless otherwise noted.
-- Has a lot of scars, but the most gruesome ones aren't anywhere visible in day-to-day life.
-- Has four tattoos. One (pictured in the icon here) is an abstract thing of various black lines and shapes that runs from her right upper arm all the way up to the side of her neck. On her left upper arm/shoulder cap, she has another one in matching style that's an asymmetrical open circle with three little V shapes around it. On her left leg, often visible in summertime, she has a blackwork serpent looping around her calf twice, with its tail on the inside of her ankle and its head resting along the outside of her knee. And finally, along the inside of her right forearm there's a line of eight dots, getting smaller towards her wrist.
-- Wears a lot of sensible basics in mostly dark grey and black. Hoodies and sweats and t-shirts, that kind of thing. Not as much leather and tough fabrics anymore, unless a particular reason calls for it.
-- Carries herself kind of like a soldier when she's out and about.
-- Probably smells like either the ocean or the woods, most of the time.
-- Sounds like this (CW for a fair bit of violence, as this is The 100). Kind of raspy, often very dry/mild/flat.
-- Occasionally drops in some Trigedasleng (a language she picked up on her post-apocalyptic Earth), which sounds like this.
-- Very reserved; if you don't know her well, expect to not get a lot in the way of facial expressions while you're getting to know her.
-- If you catch her with her partners, however, it may be a little more obvious that she does in fact have a very soft side to her. Sometimes even a little goofy.

- She is about 5'6" with a lean and muscular build. I mean she's a trained assassin, so yeah, she's going to look like one.
- She has blonde hair is often a bit tousled, with loose strands framing her face. When she is "working" or doing anything that might involve a fight, her hair is braided.
- Green eyes. Yes. GREEN EYES. This is amusing to me. If you know you know.
- When not "working", Yelena has quite the colorful wardrobe. In my head after years of being in a uniform she was forced to wear, she is now embracing all the weird looks she can find. Plaid coats, striking colors. I'm thinking thrift shopping is a favorite of hers.
- When she is "working" she prefers practical, tactical gear in neutral tones with a military or utilitarian edge.
- She really misses that vest.
- Her voice lightly husky with a distinctive Russian accent.
- She has a small scar on her right cheek, barely noticeable but present, a remnant of her time in the Red Room.
- She always has a stoic expression. Not someone who likes to share her feelings openly.
- She walks like a New Yorker. Deliberate and has no time for anyone else. Just get out of her way.
- She has a habit of cracking her knuckles when she's feeling restless
- She rolls her eyes or smirks when dealing with something or someone she finds ridiculous. Which is most of the time.
- After years of being a Black Widow, she really makes an effort to try new and different things. Food, TV shows, whatever she can absorb.

Ulysses Zane
-- Mid-twenties, double Scorpio, the most psychic of signs.
-- 5'10" and slim.
-- The icons are accurate as to how his hair and face look: he's got the curly hair at jaw-length, and the little goatee and mustache. His eyes are dark brown.
-- Almost always wearing something colorful and gaudy, which he usually makes work if you're inclined to be into that sort of thing. You can see some good gif examples in his original infopost.
-- Has a generic American accent, and you can hear what he sounds like here.
-- High-strung and it shows; he's always coming off at least a little awkward, unless he's around close friends (so... Illyana). Unless, of course, he's been smoking up, which he is prone to doing often.
-- Talks with his hands a fair bit.
-- Has a bunch of assorted tattoos (including a naked lady on his left upper arm and a Hunter S. Thompson quote over his ribs on the right) but they're mostly not visible in the day-to-day.
Llewellyn Watts
- 5'11", curly brown hair, brown eyes.
- Tends to walk with his shoulders hunched inward, though, which gives the appearance of him being a couple inches shorter than he really is.
- Has five suits that he rotates through (along with a much more varied collection of waistcoats). You can see them here, here, here, here and here. Unless otherwise mentioned, he's wearing one of these.
- If he's outdoors, he's also got his hat on. If he's indoors, the hat is hanging somewhere it shouldn't be, like on top of a fire extinguisher, a water cooler, a cat tree... that sort of thing.
- Wears a silver Star of David necklace under his shirt.
- Has a scar on his left bicep from when he shot himself. On purpose.
- Is very spinny. As in, he will spin down into a seat, spin as he's closing a door, spin around a lamppost.
- Doesn't always take the most sensible path- he'll walk down a (low) staircase banner instead of the stairs themselves, will squeeze himself between the wall and a garbage can, hop over a railing instead of walking two feet to the left to go around it, etc.
- Carries snacks in his pockets always. If there's a plate of food nearby, he's going to eat from it (including at crime scenes). Though these days he keeps mostly vegan, even when not with Steven.
- Speaks like this, with odd stops and starts.
- Abysmal handwriting. He can barely read it himself. His notes are largely written down on random scraps of paper.
- Will use your back as a writing desk.
- Is an absolute menace to plant life, picking leaves and flowers to fiddle with.
- If he doesn’t have plant life to meddle with, will pick up random objects to fidget with instead. Like dice or paperweights or etc.

- Can and will hand people things he no longer needs like a bored toddler who’s finished playing with a particular toy. If they don’t take it he will just let it drop to the floor.

He's thin. Not svelte, scrawny. He doesn't "eat" well. Unless he just has, when he looks better. Also unless he's just "eaten" he looks perpetually sleep-deprived. (He usually is.)
He's got pockmarks all over that look like someone had at him with a cigar or maybe he had a bad case of some sort of pox. (Worm holes. They are worm holes.) His right hand has a burn scar that looks like he shook hands with a hot iron (he shook hands with a Desolation avatar), and it's bad enough it tends to stay a little curled when at rest. He also has a scar across his neck, and if they're visible, he's got a stab scar in his left shoulder (from a scalpel) and another in his right shoulder (from fingers). Also, if he's not wearing a shirt and you take the time to count those ribs, he's missing two. He's also got a scar over his heart that looks like someone stabbed him in it (because they did).
He's born in 1987, but he came forward a few years, so he's probably actually in his early 30s, though he's fine with being 37. Honestly, with all the scars and the fact he's prematurely greying, he could get away with claiming he's older. Hazel-ish eyes that are really piercing if he's focusing on something.
When he's putting on professional airs (teaching, trying to impress) has excellent posture and a very posh Oxford accent (that sounds almost put on) and is stiff. Otherwise, has a slightly more relaxed accent and posture and fidgets a lot. Stutters as he gets nervous. Here, have his speaking voice because it's awesome, and his singing voice because The Mechanisms are fun.
Between the scrawny, the fidgety, and the rest, you'd be excused for thinking he's an addict. He is not.

Don Blake
- 5'9" and and a wiry kind of thin
- Messy blond hair that could use a cut. Usually carrying a few days' worth of stubble because he's lazy about shaving.
- Bright blue eyes. His eyes are the exact same as Thor's, for anyone who might notice that.
- Walks with a limp like there's something wrong with his left leg. There is in fact something wrong with his left leg, but what exactly the problem is there is...vague, so asking him about that will get you either also hysterical laughter or, "Okay, so, you know Odin?"
- Carries himself with a lot of confidence, so he might seem bigger than he is. Comes off as very friendly and easy to talk to. Unlike some surgeons he has good bedside manners.
- Even though half his icons are wearing suits, he dresses like he could not care less about clothes, or like he might be about to head out on a hike: t-shirts that are too big for him (maybe with a button-down shirt thrown over it for layering), cargo shorts, battered hiking boots. When it gets cold he'll swap the t-shirts and shorts out for sweatshirts and jeans. The boots will stay.
- When he does put on a suit, it is a surprisingly nice and well-tailored suit. You might think this is Tony's influence. It is not. Don used to care about clothes, he's just not in that phase of his life right now.
- Always, always, always carrying his walking stick or has it within arm's reach. The stick just looks like some random, appropriately-sized stick he picked up off the ground.
- Has a tattoo of Mjolnir (hammer down) on the front of his left thigh. Kind of self-conscious about it now, actually, but it's still visible sometimes when he's in shorts.
- In the comics, he's usually drawn wearing two necklaces. One of them is pretty clearly a whistle for...some reason. I've decided the other is a stylized Mjolnir pendant. (Don does not realize that this combined with the tattoo and the swearing by Odin's beard and whatnot might get him mistaken for a white supremacist, since in his universe white supremacists are more about octopus imagery.)
- Tenor, surprisingly good singing voice. Slight New York accent, Long Island if you want to get technical with it.
Thor Odinson
- 6'6", 640 pounds, not counting the armor. The Aesir are three times denser than humans. Big. Huge. Broad shoulders, muscles all over the place, just...big.
- Long blond hair, very bright blue eyes. The exact same eyes as Dr. Donald Blake, in fact.
- Just stupid handsome really
- Always wearing his armor and a swirly dramatic red cape, and usually a winged helm, although it might be sitting on some nearby piece of furniture instead. (He can wear civilian clothes, but the armor is a comfort thing right now what with his civilization being dead and all.)
- Also always has the magical hammer Mjolnir, either in his hand, in its place on his armor, or set down nearby. If it is set down nearby then good luck moving it out of that chair to sit down, because very few people can move the hammer.
- Very deep voice, faint but unplaceable 'vaguely Northern European maybe?' accent.
- Smells a little bit like the air after a lightning strike

She's mid-40s ish. Looks a bit younger, or at least well-preserved, because GFFA folks tend to live longer if they don't die prematurely.
She has red-rimmed yellow eyes, because Sith. At some point I gave up trying on the icons because my Photoshop skills are limited. Has a fairly stern demeanor, but not mean. Resting I-will-not-let-you-know-what-I'm-thinking face.
She sounds fairly standard British. That's her Kaasian accent.
If you can sense that kind of thing, she is Sith. Not the darkest of the dark, and she's been learning more of the Force, but she does still default to Dark side. She is happy to have friendly debates/discussions about it. (See the above link for her and Jedi Master Gnost-Dural.)
Will pretty much always have her lightsaber with her. If it's not on her waist (either hanging from a belt or tucked up under her shirt), it's in her purse. She believes in being prepared.
Usually dresses in classy-but-practical Earth clothes if she's teaching, jeans and t-shirts if she's hanging out, and armor if she's expecting a fight.
Bucky Barnes
-- Blue-grey eyes, brown hair that's juuust about hitting his shoulders, usually in a messy side part right now.
-- Wears the typical MCU 'I'm laying low' wardrobe of nondescript hoodies, baseball caps, and jeans.
-- When he's out and about, he usually has the left sleeve of whatever he's wearing pinned up so that it doesn't get in his way. Underneath, he has the shattered remains of what used to be a metal arm - so mostly just the shoulder cap with the bright red star on it.
-- Is usually trying to blend in as much as possible, so he's very much projecting 'Just Some Guy' energy as he's walking around. If need be, though, he'll snap right into obvious military-style efficiency.
-- Still kinda soft-spoken and withdrawn right now, and doesn't emote much when interacting with new people.
Raiden
- 6'7"
- Big. Beefy, muscular, broad-shouldered. Huge.
- Not, however, imposing, because he is basically a golden retriever given human (well, Nephilim) form
- Close-cropped black hair, blue-grey eyes. No scars.
- Mostly wears t-shirts and jeans or sweatpants, along with very practical boots.
- Always, always always, to the point that I spent most of the series waiting for the reveal that he was hiding something under there, wearing a backwards baseball cap. He even keeps it on during sex. He is not hiding anything under there. He just thinks it's cool.
- His voice is also big. Loud, booming, no volume control. He has an absolutely terrible singing voice.
- Slight Southern accent. Raiden spent an extended period of time in the South at some point in the recent past, which is why he has an accent and Gray doesn't.
- Clumsy, in a 'too big guy in too small spaces' way. Working in a kitchen or with a sword in his hands, he is the very opposite of clumsy, but he does tend to fumble through the rest of his life.
- Messy. His apartment, minus the kitchen, is a wreck because Alastair isn't there to make him clean it and Gray sure doesn't care.
- I am really bad about mentioning this in my narrative, but he's almost always snacking on something, and his snacks are like. A giant bowl of popcorn or a whole pizza.
- If he's shirtless, there are two slits visible over his shoulder blades, where his wings come out. You might mistake these for scars or be able to tell that they're actually some kind of opening.
- The wings are big, feathered, and black with orange accent feathers.
- His aura, if you can see that kind of thing, is also orange, because we love a signature color in this canon.
Re: Raiden
(Well, other than Steven and Marc who are just plain used to it by now.)
Gray
- More likely to be taken for 16-17ish.
- 5'9", which isn't that short for a human but makes him possibly the shortest male Nephilim.
- Slender, yet surprisingly built under his clothes, especially considering that he doesn't exercise. Exercising makes him sleepy.
- To add to his woes, sounds young enough that someone who hears him over the phone at one point mistakes him for an actual child. So his voice is pretty high and light for a post-pubescent male.
- Has traces of a Northern California accent, but nothing very strong.
- Messy, curly blond hair and brown eyes.
- Dresses for comfort and the possibility of falling asleep anywhere, at any time, in any position. The boy's out and about in pajama pants or basketball shorts, t-shirts and hoodies, slide sandals with knee-high socks or else Converse, because he has a whole Converse collection that takes up a walk-in closet at home. (This sure does not help him look any older, let me tell you what.)
- His version of making an effort would be, like, skinny jeans and a tank top.
- Most of his clothes are in pastel or light colors, and he wears a lot of graphic tees with either anime characters or cute cartoon animals taking naps on them.
- Either bouncing off the walls hyper or about to fall asleep. There is no middle ground, and it can switch at the snap of Sloth's figurative fingers.

Lydia Bennet
- Quite tall for a woman, let's say around 5'10"
- On the thin side. Conflicted about this, as plumpness was the Regency beauty standard but thin seems to be in here? Confusing.
- Brown hair, worn very meticulously curled and usually pinned up [Edit: Despite half her icons, she does NOT have bangs. Yes, the very different hair in her icons drives me batty, but beggars, choosers, so forth and so on.], and brown eyes. Very fair and takes great pains to keep herself so, because Regency beauty standards and also because she has learned about skin cancer. Has taken to leaving off her bonnet, as they seem to be quite not the thing, but still carries a parasol.
- English accent. Hertfordshire, if one is being precise.
- Exclusively wears dresses. Has embraced the cottagecore aesthetic as a compromise between her desire to be fashionable and stylish and her absolute resolution that she could not be caught dead in shorts.
- Has learned all about makeup from TikTok, but sticks to a very natural look
- Her skincare routine has like fifteen steps, also thanks to TikTok
- Smells amazing. I have not picked out her signature perfume yet but she definitely has one.
- If you look closely at her hands and forearms she has a surprising number of small scars from spell-tithes.
Stark
-Only the one eye, obvs, which is blue
-Always wears the mask, though he has a few options to choose from now
-Under the mask is glowy gold light/energy which is not radioactive but he gets asked that more often than he ever thought he would
-Hasn't grown his hair out in a WHILE but it's ginger when he hasn't shaved it
-Sounds vaguely space Australian, usually soft spoken but not always
-Can actually sing nicely just doesn't very often
-About 6', often makes himself look smaller
-Has been hitting the gym with regularity for a while and while he's never gonna be a big dude he does have some muscle to him
-Wears a lot of earth tones when left to his own devices
-Likes hoodies because he can hid in them a bit, especially ones with thumb holes in the sleeves
-Hums when he's nervous
-Fidgets with things when he's nervous, like the buckle on his mask strap, or the ends of his sleeves
-Not so jumpy as he was when he first came back (but still jumpier than the average person)
-Smiles more often too
Sam Eagle

Marc Spector / Steven Grant
- Look just like Oscar Isaac, so same hair and eye color (black and brown, respectively)
- 5'9"
- Born March 9, 1987. They did not get snapped so they are currently 39.years old.
- Have no scars anywhere on their body.
- Always wear a silver Star of David necklace. It's typically under their shirt collar but it's not hidden, so fair to say it's easily spotted when they move assuming they're not wearing turtlenecks.
- Unless otherwise noted, there's no specific visual cue that they've switched control of the body. It used to be that their eyes would roll up when one of them took over, but now it's an immediate change in voice and demeanor.
- Canonically both smell the same.
- Blessedly Oscar was not forced to take on the MCU six pack but the body is still in good shape.
Steven
- Default mode is he tries to shrink into himself. Shoulders slumped, hands close to his chest, small steps.
- Even his nicest clothes look like they are a half a size too big. They also tend to look various stages of rumpled. Marc's clothes also manage to look rumpled on Steven.
- Is not afraid of patterns on his shirts. Is neither cool nor stylish enough to pick good ones.
- When out and about, is usually wearing a pocketwatch, the chain of which can be seen hanging near the front of his trousers.
- Wears boxers
- Per Oscar Isaac, Steven's British accent is a combination of Enfield London and Karl Pilkington. So obviously no further explanation is needed, right?
- Seriously though, he sounds like this. Not posh. Not cockney. Not Northern. Working class. If I wrote it phonetically there'd be a lot more "innit?" and "dunnit?" and so on. More use of "mate" and "bruv" as well.

- Also we joke in the fandom that Steven's actual super power is making everything he says sound like a question. Not like an uptalker, but like there's an unspoken "Is it all right I said that?" behind everything.
Marc
- Stands up straight, moves like he has no problem taking up space or using the body
- Clothes always fit well and look good. Favors dark solids. If he's in patterns he got stuck in Steven's clothes
- Steven's clothes manage to look better on him. They don't magically transform when he takes over but they seem like they fit and are less wrinkled.
- Wears boxer briefs
- Default facial expression is flat. The amount of icons I have of this man where his mouth is a line so straight you could use it to check the level on a painting, I swear.
- Has a Chicago accent but it's not a full on "Da Bearsh" style. He sounds like this.
