What's In A Name?

LJ names. We all have them. We probably think some of them are pretty clever. But to someone who doesn't know your fandom, your LJ handle may not make any sense whatsoever. So I thought I'd ask:

What does your character's LJ name mean, and how did you decide on it?

Since it's my bright idea, I'll start!

multiplez: Well, her name is Z, and she multiplies. I tend to say it like 'multiplex' with a z, which, yes, sounds funny.

swerval_zero: Her name is Zero! Zero doesn't always use actual words, preferring instead words she makes up herself. I tend to tone this down at FH because a lot of people don't get it. 'Swerval' is a Zero-speak adjective, meaning something like 'awesome' or 'cool.'

screwyoumarvel: In the recent Marvel Crossover Event Civil War (tm) (yes they really trademarked 'Civil War') Steve got killed. So, screw you, Marvel. It gives me vindictive glee to type his username every time I sign in. :D

the_merriest - when Rikku joins your party in FFX - as in, her cousin's crazy-dangerous suicide pilgrimage, and by the way, people from her tribe aren't allowed to go in the temples anyway - everyone sort of stands around blinking and going, "uhhhh ... this is a good idea, really." Until one of the guys shrugs and says, "Okay, well, the more the merrier, ya?" And she bounces and says, "Then I'll just have to be the merriest!"

Not that she thinks this is going to be a happy fun joy ride, but she'll be damned if she's not the most upbeat, cheerful, optimistic person on their ... suicidal crazy-dangerous quest against a thousand-year-old demon and its entire psycho religion. Great. She's still smiling, see? She IS, dammit!

sizzler_sisters - Creativity at work, on this one.

Palest - Naminé is nearly colorless - light skin, wheat-blonde hair, white slip dress, no accessories. The only non-white spots are her dark blue eyes and her light blue sandals. They play that up, too; there's a zoom-out glowing shot (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v328/Rellyjean/namine/namine1_15.jpg) of her in a dream sequence near the beginning of KH2 where she looks like a white streak at first until you can see she's a person.

Shadow - During Chain of Memories, Naminé refers to herself as Kairi's "shadow." (There are specific and spoilery reasons for this.) And at least at her intro to FH, Naminé thinks of herself less as an actual person on her own and more as Kairi's echo. Also, she's mysterious and enigmatic and shadowy in her own way.

So, she's a shadow, but instead of being a dark, cloudy one, she's a pale and fading out one. I thought that was an interesting contrast, especially for an artist who is so tied to visualizations.

ktarian_wildman: I chose Ktarian because Naomi is half Ktarian and I chose Wildman because that's her surname.

pyroliz: I chose pyro because that's another name for fire. Since Liz is a pyrokinetic I wanted part of her LJ handle to have something to do with fire and pyro was the most obvious choice. I chose Liz because that's her name.

imcalledandros: The name comes from the PRIS episode 'from out of nowhere part 11' when Andros first introduced to the other rangers he said 'I'm called Andros'.

visor_laforge: The visor part comes from the fact that Geordi uses one to see and his surname is La Forge so I decided to join the two together to make his LJ handle.

bridge_carson: It's his name! Plus "itsbuttery" was already taken.

grenfelzer: In the book A Wizard's Holiday, Carmela's in an alien chat room when someone asks her "Do you grenfelz?" The explanation makes her laugh hysterically, though we-the-reader never find out what it is, exactly. The only clue we're given is in the next book, where the topic comes up again and her brother asks about it. Her answer? "It's kind of like emmfozing, but with chocolate."

In the pilot episode of Veronica Mars, Logan's introduced with Veronica's voiceover saying, "Every school has an obligatory psychotic jackass. He's ours."

"psychotic_jackass" was too long for a username, so I shortened it to "psycho_jackass." It also served as a quick warning to other players that this guy might be a dick.

tatooine_doofus Luke's home planet is Tatooine, he's...not the smoothest thing ever. La!

prof_lyman Because "finest muffins" gives you all the wrong impression and "victoryismine" was already taken. Back when we had a CJ she was "prof_cregg" so I went with this to be consistent.

likeguidelines It's a line from the first Pirate movie. Elizabeth Swann squawks about the pirates breaking the Pirate Code and Barbossa points out that it be "more like guidelines than actual rules." It pretty much sums up his entire existence.

And Anakin's gone through a few...he started as

emo_padawan because he was an apprentice and sulked like it was his profession. Then he turned evil and became "darthbanthabell" to make sure everyone knew it was FH!Anakin returning. Then after he was redeemed, well,

sith_happened. And that name was all Rory-mun's idea. :D

"Son of dragons" is, in canon, the literal translation of "Tannim." "Tannim" was given to him by his dragon mentor. It's both a play on his parents' surname (Drake) and a reference to his relationship with his mentor.

krycek_rat: Krycek's fandom nickname is "Ratboy", which I think is from this quote from Tunguska (s4 ep09) -

KRYCEK: Hey, you go underground, you gotta learn to live with the rats.

Basically he's a snively little backstabber and I'm not that creative.

x5_alec: There are a lot of Alec journals out there, and it's hard to find a combination of Alec and X5-494 - I wanted an element from both because he was going to join the game as "X5-494" and only get named later on.

behindeyesonly: I think this one is

bruiser_in_pink's fault (maybe also

kawalsky's?), since I couldn't think of anything and there was much tweaking of words around until something worked.

It refers to Logan's persona of "Eyes Only", with which he makes his guerrilla cyberjournalist reports, and that he is the man behind that persona, which only a couple people know.

turtle_techie: Donatello does machines. ... *cough* Yeah, he's the technophile of the four turtles, so "turtle" and "techie". This was, honestly, chosen without knowing what

turtle_toughguy's name was yet.

roadhousequeen: I actually rather like this one, but it's not particularly clever; Ellen runs the Harvelle Roadhouse back in Nebraska and that's her domain, which makes her queen, see?

socksofcool - In canon Booth wears really funky socks, which apparently David helps pick.

twohalvesofaphd - In the pilot, Goodman refuses to acknowledge Zack's existence because he "only talks to PhDs". Zack in turn points out he's halfway though two doctorates and two halves make a whole, so he should totally count.

wannabehunter - Jo wants to be a hunter. Of course she's still more like an overgrown puppy than a big bad hunter.

psycho_barbie - Xena fandom nickname for Cal, it's been around for ages and ages, and I luckily managed to snag it.

surferboy_09er - Dick surfs, he's a boy and the clique he's in on Veronica Mars are known as '09ers. Because they live in the 90909 zipcode.

swedish_chef_ - Self-explainitory.

witchy_prue - Her name's Prue and she's a witch. Yep.

motherboy_bluth - Buster's last name is Bluth and Motherboy is a organization that promotes mother/son bonding. Buster is way too old to be a Motherboy.

walks_two_paths - Savannah is half-witch and half-sorceror -- a combination that was never supposed to be able to happen. She has the powers of both and can do both witch and sorceror spells... so, pretty much, she's balancing two paths of magic and walking two paths of life.

future_visions - Phoebe is a witch and she can see visions of the future and of the past... thus the user name.

notafairmaiden - In canon, Gwynn wants to be anything but a lady and stay at home. She doesn't want to be a maiden fair, she wants to be a fighter for what she believes in. Unfortunately,

notamaidenfair was taken, so she became

notafairmaiden.

imac_kenzie: Mac's surname is Mackenzie. She's a computer nerd and favours Mac computers, so having 'iMac' in there totally made sense to me waaay back when I first app-ed. Yep.

justmisplaced: I actually haaate this username with a passion, but whatever. I was lacking in creativity when I made his account. Basically? He was abducted, and then he came back, so he wasn't totally lost forevar, just temporarily misplaced...

outofbrooklyn: Um, Aiden grew up in Red Hook, Brookyn. Simple as that.

I will never stop geeking out over that icon. Never.

neurotic_witch - Because Chris is both quite neurotic and a witch. Clever, aren't I? I wanted to use some variation of "neurotic little freak" since Paige calls him that in the S6 episode Spin City, but there were way too many letters.

untouchableskin - Marie started off as "touchablemarie" because I wanted players to realize at a glance that she wasn't quite Rogue yet. After she got her powers, I changed the journal name and "untouchablemarie" was one letter too long, plus I knew that at some point I'd want her to start going by Rogue and I didn't want to have to rename the journal again.

marsheadtilt - In canon, Veronica is famous for tilting her head when she wants something from someone. In the S1 episode "An Echolls Family Christmas", Weevil totally calls her on it and she says "You should be lucky I'm not twirling my hair. I'd own you." Of course, when I initially brought her in the game, I had the oh-so-clever username "veronicamars1" - but I changed it pretty early on.

cameronmitchell is really hard to get. *nods*

thebluespirit - Zuko has been banished from the Fire Nation, but sometimes he used to spy on things going on and sneak into cities controlled by the Fire Nation dressed up in dark clothes and wearing a blue spirit mask. At some point he takes action against his own Nation by freeing the Avatar. Since then his persona has been considered an enemy of the Fire Nation and his outlaw nickname is "the blue spirit".

light_a_spark - I had trouble coming up with a good username for Roy. Most obvious combinations were already taken. I finally settled on this one. Roy is able to set things on fire using his alchemy, but in order to do so he needs a spark to begin with. This is why he uses special gloves made of ignition cloth. He snaps his fingers, it creates a spark and then he can do his thing. So yeah, light_a_spark. Please ignore that he's refusing to do alchemy at this point in time.

demonbelthazor: "Belthazor" was taken, and I wanted it clear that this wasn't the grown up canon version of Cole Turner -- he was still a bad boy. :)

blessed_twice: "When three planets burn as one over a sky of dancing light, and magic will rest for a holy day to welcome a twice blessed child." That would be Wyatt. "twice_blessed" was taken, so "blessed_twice" it was.

sexydoctor: Not really creative, but Christian's a doctor, and he's a sexay beast.

best idea ever, totaly

slr_mercury: because all combinations of Ami Mizuno were taken, as were any normal spellings of Sailor Mercury. So i went with a license-plate like shortening. I also wanted to have the name be useful once she gets her powers and becomes Sailor Mercury. Again. hee.

heterodine: ALL forms of Heterodyne were taken, as was Agatha Clay and all variations on that. So i went with a badly spelled version.

notstakedyet when the game started it was common to pick names that were variations on "not [blank] yet" to indicate the character's age. I originally apped Angelus, so he was notsouledyet. He then got souled and needed a rename, and

oatmanspatient suggested

notstakedyet, which amused me on many levels.

willbedone was suggested by

soldtoarmenians when I couldn't think of a good name for Willow. It refers to how she did a Will be Done spell to get here. Plus there's the Will/Willow connection with her name.

repeterpetrelli is from the way Heroes fandom sometimes refers to Peter as a RePeter since his power is to copy other powers. I am stunned I was able to snag this name. I am likewise stunned that I was able to grab the username that I did for the Petrelli family, but I shall stay mum on that so as not to spoil the surprise 8)

hotceltogoth comes from canon, actually; I don't have the book immediately handy, but I believe it's Dairine who refers to Ronan as a 'Celto-Goth' -- for the facts that he's Irish, and has a propensity for wearing black. Lots of black. Exclusively. And there are references as well to him being attractive -- that is, hot -- so

hotceltogoth it was. :D

Hee, I just finished reading Wizards at War (ZOMG FLAILSQUEE) and I can't actually find the line to save my life, but yeah, I think it's Dairine who calls him a "Celto-Goth hottie." I remember this, because I sat up and went "OH THAT'S WHERE THE USERNAME CAME FROM!"

I was amused by the number of variations on the word "hot" that got used to describe him im W@W. I think "hottitude" might be my favorite.

snarkyprincess: In the very beginning of the series, Summer was kind of a bitch, and not in a fun way. She was basically a spoiled princess. As the first season continued, she was given more layers and wasn't just a shallow snob. She was even funny and, at times, snarky. So I combined these two aspects of her personality to create this user name.

cookinggeek: I wanted a name that had nothing to do with magic or witchy stuff because Piper didn't know she was a witch when the game started. It was always noted on the show that Piper was shy and awkward in high school, so I wanted a name to sort of reflect that instead, hence the geek part of the name. She also wants to be a chef, so that's where the first part of the name comes from. I'm pretty sure

demonbelthazor suggested this one, but I could be remembering that wrong.

dr_jwilsonmd Pretty straight forward, Dr. James Wilson, MD. He started out as "Tooniceuglyties" which referenced the fact that he's known as a 'nice guy' and House_MD wardrobe dresses him in some of the ugliest ties, but that's a handful to keep typing out so ... name change!

iftheseshadows This comes from Neil doing "Midsummer Night's Dream" and the infamous Puck line in Dead Poet's Socity, "If these shadows have offended..." I felt it was better than just using his name.

misshargrove: This...is really a no-brainer.

fantastic_torch: Johnny is part of the Fantastic Four, thus the Fantastic. And the ladies call him Torch. Hey, can't go wrong there. Plus? Everything else I went for was already taken. Oddly, even though this was not my first choice, I like it the best.

morpherboy: he is a boy, and he morphs, la

threeweapons: bastardization of a quote from one of the kel books. neal, alanna's squire, says that his knight mistress has three weapons: her sword, her dagger, and her tongue.

dorky_broots: he is broots and he is a dork. la.

drlambert: Pretty self-explanatory. Lacking in imagination because it appears there are other RPers out there using the cool variations.

hera_rises: Any of us watching "Battlestar Galactica" know the constant references to the Olympic pantheon: Hera, Athena, Helo, Apollo -- the list goes on. In the episode "Bastille Day," prisoner Tom Zarek refers to Bill Adama as Zeus, a sardonic commentary of the officer's command style. Segments of the BSG fandom have taken the allusions a bit farther, laying the title of "Hera" on Laura Roslin. Then a fellow fic author titled a story, "Zeus Descends, Hera Rises." Given that the Roslin I RP has been to the brink of death, and then returned, I thought some allusion to a phoenix rising from the ashes might be appropriate. So, with some apologies to the author, I snatched

hera_rises. (And if you were wondering, yes, the story is a smutfic. And well written, at that. =) )

fh_anonymous: This was back when I thought I'd never have a real character in the game and Truth asked me to help out with Spider's field trips. I figured I would only ever be playing the monsters and stuff anonymously so when she told me to make a journal for it, this is the name I chose.

bruiser_in_pink: The code name given to Molly by one of her teammates is Bruiser (even though she would have preferred Princess Powerful) and not only does she favor pastel colors, especially pink, but her eyes glow a purple-ish pink when she really draws on her powers.

moonbrain_tam I wanted something for River that mentioned her being ~~crazy~~ not quite mentally stable, and most of the other things I came up with were already taken.

no_archangel Gabriel is an archangel turned human. He also isn't very nice.
