How can I get exposed to the creepy alien-ness that will take me over?

If you touch the shiny rock, or the water where it’s hanging out, or drink the water (WHY WOULD YOU DRINK THE WATER?), you’ll be exposed. You’ll also be exposed if you get drooled on or bitten by a teal deer or an alot who has been infested. Or by a person who’s been exposed, but let’s not think too hard about why they might be biting or drooling (...or other bodily fluiding...) on you.

During this time, victims will also start to become more violent and lose their sense of self to the alien consciousness - this can happen at any speed desired (though let’s say the very fastest descent into madness would still take at least a day), based on how mentally vulnerable you feel your character is, regardless of how slowly the physical changes are happening.

Traditional methods of healing do nothing, and magical/supernatural healing only delays the spread of the infestation: it’s rewriting the cells of your body one by one, so the healers also have to be fighting it back cell by cell. Those with a natural healing factor will find themselves taxed to the limit to fight off the infestation, only delaying it by a day or so.

It will take you half the amount of time to heal as you’ve spent infested, assuming you haven’t also had the magical healing of limited-but-still-some-effectiveness. So if you were exposed on August 1st and ran off into the woods to eat squirrels for the week, you’ll still be fighting off the effects of the BDE on Wednesday after the event, assuming you don’t stop by the clinic post-finale. But if you have a healing factor or are given healing, recovery can happen much more rapidly after the finale.

Powers:

Your character will still be able to use whatever powers they have, but they won’t be in the most normal frame of mind if the infestation has progressed. Control may not be at the highest level.

If your character gets infected, there’s a chance they’ll come out with a scar of some variety. This is opt-in, so don’t worry about it if you don’t want to deal with it. This means that when everyone has finished returning to normal, you can have a permanent little reminder of why curiosity killed that darn cat in the form of an altered feature from the infestation. (This can range anywhere between nails that are more like claws, pure black eyes, or a patch of odd skin somewhere on the body. Think pockmarks, a grey piece of bubbly skin on your lower back, etc.)

Library researcher and clinic volunteer sign-ups have no end-date; they're just a general head-count, and you're welcome to play that by ear if you make a latebreaking decision. We'll ask the regular clinic poster to add a thread for volunteers to ping in, each day, so that sick people can approach them if they choose, rather than running the regular staff off their feet!

A sample of the stone has been taken and given to the closest thing to scientists that the administration can think of. Who, in turn, send out the call for students and townies who might be able to analyze it with their elite scientific knowledge. Or, you know, poke it with a stick.

Volunteering for this does place your character in direct contact with the stone, making them the second wave of the infected. Unless you plan for at least one attempt at healing, your character will probably not be in the proper mental state to join the finale.
