On Dreamwidth, Moving, Polls, etc.

The polls closed two days ago, and by a far-greater-than-the-Turkey-referendum-or-the-US-election margin, Move has won - with 21 for votes and one against. This means we're going to begin the process of moving the game to Dreamwidth, which we hope to complete by May 3rd, three days before the summer semester Welcome Picnic.

To do that, we're going to need everyone's help on two matters. Please make sure to read this post carefully.

Everyone needs to move their character journals to Dreamwidth. Here's how. )

We need to know which characters you intend to keep playing. )

Finally, we'll make our final FH backup imports on May 5th. Please don't post anything into the comms at that time - we can't guarantee it'll make the trip over to Dreamwidth if you do.

Look What They've Done to My Song, Ma... (Livejournal Shenanigans and Possible Game Changers)

We interrupt your musical stylings, pre-Easter Peep-vilification and numb, Twitter-scrolling horror to bring you a once-again relevant blast from the past: the LJ vs. Dreamwidth decision.

Some background, if you haven't logged in recently: Livejournal has moved the servers for all of their non-paid accounts from the U.S. to Russia, and has a new Terms of Service agreement that logged-in users (even paid and permanent) must accept before it'll let you get anywhere. Said TOS puts all of our journals under the requirements of already-existing Russian internet/blogging laws, and adds some concerning new rules, including... )There's a lot of what-ifs in there, but people are justifiably concerned about the risks to both their personal and RP journals, as well as their privacy. So, to the question posed several times in years past, "At what point do we reconsider the question of moving the game to Dreamwidth," the answer is now. The now point.

Like we've promised since the first time the issue came up, we won't be doing that unilaterally. We've created another LJ or Dreamwidth poll -- one that doesn't require you to log into LJ to fill it out -- and we're leaving it open until 11:59 pm EST on April 15th. Once it's closed, we'll tally up the votes and let you know about the results. If the majority vote to move the game, at that point we'll start hammering out more details on how and when we'll accomplish that together.

Things to know about the poll:

  • You don't need to be logged-in to anything to fill it out

  • You do need to leave a name so we know you're an FH player/gremlin/squirrel and not a bot or troll. (Unless you're Fosse.)

  • Only the admins will see the name.

  • Only the admins will see who voted which way.

  • Unlike an LJ poll, you can't go back and edit your vote, but if you do change your mind, just vote again with the same name and add "Updated {date}" to the name field and we'll delete the old one for you.

Location Poll Results and FH Plans

Hail, Fellow Fandomites!

Time to catch up with the results of the location poll that closed at the end of Saturday night: the final tally was 21 to 12 in favor of remaining on Livejournal.*

While we know that's not exactly unanimous (and wish fervently that there were a solution on which we could all agree unanimously), it is the preference of the majority, which is what we feel it's best to work with for now. If things get seriously bad on LJ in the future, we'll definitely re-assess the situation.

We're going to be doing our best to keep the game up to date on official repairs and user workarounds to the problems we've all been experiencing, as well as anything less helpful that might be coming at us. We'll keep posting news and updates here, so watch for the livejournal tag (or stalk it, if you'd like a heads-up in your inbox).

We also know (boy howdy) that the status quo isn't ideal, and we absolutely understand if it's just not workable for you. However, we'd hate to lose any of our players, so if there's anything we can do to help make Livejournal bearable -- changes to community designs, setting up new OOC processes to avoid the problems, working up tutorials, or things we haven't thought of at all, please talk to us about it, either here in the suggestions thread, or at any time by e-mail!

__

* (And the average fear-level induced by Frank the weeping goat is 10 out of 10. I am only sorry that I had already created the poll before I thought to make the top of the range 11 while leaving the label "On a scale of 1 to 10...")

Poll Reminder!

Just a heads-up that the second FH location poll closes tonight at 11:59 Pacific, so get your votes in!

Poll Results: Reply Hazy, Ask Again Later

Hey, folks.

The location poll ended up thusly:

I want to stay on Livejournal, period. 18 (45.0%)
I want to move to Dreamwidth, period. 10 (25.0%)
I want to wait until Livejournal Release 90 to see how many known bugs have been fixed, then vote. 12 (30.0%)
I don't want to do any of those things and have another suggestion which I'll leave in the comments. 0 (0.0%)

Though staying on Livejournal got the most votes of each individual category, the "Wait And See" option received enough that the final balance of stay vs. go is still uncertain.

So, though there was one latebreaking alternate suggestion of moving away from the journal format entirely which we're seriously considering (buying up cheap land, forming a commune, and becoming the Fandom High LARP would work for you guys, right?), for the moment we're going to go with waiting until Release 90, then re-polling with a final* yes/no vote.

As mentioned earlier, Release 90 is already in Russian beta, which means it will probably go live late this week or early next week, so the wait shouldn't be too long!

Questions, comments, pie, cake, and ponies are always welcome.

[*No sales ever really final. Should the main vote be to stay, we'll always be willing to re-examine the situation if LJ does something in the future that makes RPing here unreasonably difficult. ]

Poll Reminder!

One last heads-up: the FH Location Poll closes tonight at 11:59 pm PST. AKA in about 5 hours!

Reminder: FH Location Poll

Just a heads-up (I'll post another tomorrow, no fear) that the location poll closes Saturday night at 11:59 PST (aka 3:00 Sunday morning for us Easterners).

While I've got y'all here, though, just as an FYI, the wait for Release 90 will probably not be more than a week or so more, because the Russian-language beta just opened.

There are no obvious changes to the Classic Comments that I can see, but that may not mean anything. With Release 89, the Classic Comments weren't even enabled yet when it went to Russian Beta, so it may very well be that any updates or fixes will likewise not show up until the English-language beta that we don't have access to.

What is coming that actually looks useful (or like we as RPers will care about it at all) are:

  • The <lj-spoiler> tag. It basically works like a cut-tag (and has the same grammar for creating it) but it works on flists, in posts, and in comments, providing a link that, when you click it, reveals the hidden spoiler info without reloading the page. (Though if you're reading comments by e-mail, you'll see the full html, including the spoiler, just like you would if someone manually whited-out information in their comment by changing the text color.)

  • Scheduling a post and changes to pre- and post-dating posts. None of the functions we use to tweak the order of posts in our journals are gone; they've just moved things around a bit, and added the ability to pre-write a post and then have it post live to your friendslist at some date in the future.

Once that stuff really goes live, I'll stick up an info-post about the updates and how they work. (Or... don't work, as the case may be.)

Livejournal Update: State of the Goat-Punching

Hi, folks. We know you've been waiting on news and discussion about Fandom High's future location and how we're going to work that out as a community. So have we, but it's been pretty scarce, and thus there hasn't been much to pass on before now. Livejournal has been exceptionally Livejournalish for the past month, even more so than usual, about not letting us know what's going on and when/if things will be changed.

Like we said back in the Open Forum, though, while we still hope we can stay with LJ, your admin critters don't want to be them, so we want to keep you up to date with what we've been doing and thinking.

We've been gathering as much LJ-based information as we can by tracking comments in the existing [livejournal.com profile] news and [livejournal.com profile] lj_releases posts, new posts in the [livejournal.com profile] changelog community, and also joining the Russian language beta, [livejournal.com profile] lj_ru_beta. Sadly there's a very limited amount of news we can glean from those last two, for technical reasons with changelog and language reasons with the other. (Huge, huge thanks to [livejournal.com profile] taseredagod for helping us post feedback there by translating it into Russian so the techs could understand it.)

We've also been keeping up on the changes made at Dreamwidth; we're happy to let you know that they've now set things up so that imported comments can be "claimed" and attached to the owner's Dreamwidth journal. So if a move does happen, you'll be able to fix all those Open ID comments in old threads, and automagically put the icons back so everything is pretty again. (As long as the player is still around to do that for their old/current character journals.)

In the OF, we said the plan was to announce a decision about LJ vs. Somewhere Else by February 19th, with a poll beforehand (unless things at LJ got so very fixed that staying seemed a foregone conclusion). We're still planning on a poll, and we're still not going anywhere if the majority of players vote to stay. We do, however, need to shift those dates a bit, due to some hopefully-good news. )

Questions? Comments? Suggestions? We're all ears. Except for Lainey, who's all toes.

Comment Pages: Announcements, Discussion, And Goat-Punching

Hi, folks. We have some breaking news for you, so hold on to your mountie hats: Livejournal has worse design, usability, and customer service than Portalocity!

It's a shock to us, too, so we'll give you a minute to get your breath back.

Right, on to the pertinent information: LJ rolled out their new sitewide comments page in the middle of the night last night. This is the page you see if you have custom comment pages turned off -- like almost every RPer on LJ -- or if you're not logged in at all.

The new version, though it has a few new useful features, also breaks the heck out of comment organization and makes RP as we do it almost impossible. (It also screws up anonmemes/kinkmemes, among other fannish pursuits.)

Workarounds for Now )

The FUTURE (imaginary sparkletext) )

In conclusion...

We hate this too. We're as frustrated with the update as you are, and we'll keep doing the best we can to make things work. We welcome your thoughts, questions, and suggestions!

[And now the floor, she is open!]
